Have you ever wondered who fought in the last military engagement in the Indian Wars? Who was the only unit to attack both high points at the Battle of San Juan Hill? Find out at the Library’s Featured Friday program! On Friday, August 19, 2016, Major Charles Williams will discuss the history of the Buffalo Soldiers and the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum. The program will begin at 11 AM in the library’s meeting room.
The origin of the term “Buffalo Soldier” has been a source of debate for historians, but there is evidence that it arose from an encounter with Native American warriors. The term was later used to describe each of the African-American U.S. Army regiments formed in 1866. Buffalo Soldier regiments were engaged in many military conflicts including the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War and the Battle of Ambos Nogales in World War I. The mission of the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum is to preserve, promote and perpetuate the history, tradition and outstanding contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers and African American soldiers. The Museum offers its patrons a complete look at African-American military history from the Revolutionary War to the Persian Gulf War.
This presentation is the latest installment in the library’s Featured Friday series. These monthly programs offer a variety of lectures, movies and special programs of cultural, historical and local interest.
