  • El Pupusodromo No. 1

6817 Bissonnet Outer Loop - SW

    713-270-5030

Don't judge this book by its cover. Join the Salvadoran family crowd for spectacular grilled masa disks stuffed with white cheese that deserve to be the next great American street food. Some of their more interesting fare includes a strangely unfamiliar seafood soup and tender little corn-studded tamalitos in thinned sour cream.

  • Los Ranchitos

7687 Clarewood Outer Loop - SW

    713-777-5703

This comfortable, mellow restaurant reflects the culture and cuisine of El Salvador. The centerpiece of the Salvadoran table is the pupusa, an extra-heavy corn tortilla split, filled with goodies such as pork, cheese and herbs, then grilled. Though menudo sends some scurrying for the safety of an enchilada plate, Los Ranchitos serves some breathtakingly tender tripe. Camarones a la crema is happiness in a bowl, with shrimp and vegetables simmered in a sauce of tomatoes, pepper, cumin, annatto and cream. The adventure-challenged diner will find fajitas, grilled chicken and some really good tacos al carbon.
  • Pollo Campero

5605 Bellaire Outer Loop - SW

    713-395-0990

When this fried chicken franchise first opened, people waited in line for five hours to get in. What's drawing the crowds is the yearning for a taste of home. For Houston's 115,000 Central American residents, Pollo Campero conjures up intense memories. The chain's trademark, a chicken in a cowboy hat, is part of Latin American pop culture -- he even appears in a cartoon show for kids. Oh, yeah, the chicken isn't bad either. It's moist, tender and amazingly grease-free.

  • Sabor! Central American Cuisine

    713-667-6001

This upscale Salvadoran spot by the same people who own the El Pupusatón pupuserías is comfortable, charming and definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a luxurious late breakfast with fried bananas, or a stunning pupusa lunch.

  • Tex-Chick

    712 1/2 Fairview Montrose

    713-528-4708

This tiny four-table cafe may well be Houston's only authentic outpost of Puerto Rican cooking. Yes, the signboard menu still offers up the basic burger fix, but smart customers know to look for the chalkboard with the Puerto Rican specialties of the day. Odd hours (opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m.) do little to prevent a steady stream of Houston's Caribbean Hispanics from making their way in. Portions are generous, prices low, and the posters of travel to Puerto Rico a bonus.
