  • Brasserie 19

1962 W. Gray St. River Oaks

    713-524-1919

A River Oaks playground for Houston's rich and famous, Brasserie 19 nevertheless has the food to match the crowds and the hype, turning out classic French and Belgian staples like steak frites and cassoulet and serving an impressive list of beers and wines to match. The sleek bar is the place to be if you're young and single, while the restaurant's main floor is a gathering point for socialites and food-lovers alike. The egalitarian patio is the most pleasant spot to dine, however, with far less noise and a pretty view of the brightly lit River Oaks Theatre marquee across West Gray.

  • Broken Spoke Cafe

    1809 Washington Heights

    713-863-7029

This Belgian cafe known for great moules frites (mussels steamed in white wine and butter with fries) serves classic Belgium dishes like the croque monsieur (grilled ham and cheese sandwich), salade Niçoise (tuna with green beans and boiled eggs) and entrées like filet mignon. You can have the Broken Spoke burger with grilled onions, jalapeños and mushrooms for lunch or dinner, and brunch on Sundays. There's good Belgian beers like Stella Artois and Chimay, and a 15 percent discount if you show up on a bicycle. You can get your crepe fix with several combinations, such as crepes with ice cream and chocolate sauce (crepe mikado) or crepes with brown sugar (crepe casonade).

  • Café Brussels

    1718 Houston Ave. Heights

    713-222-6996

Behind Cafe Brussels is Catherine Duwez, who once operated Cafe Montrose and the Broken Spoke, both of which were fine Belgian restaurants. There’s a rhyme to remember when dining at this restaurant. “At Café Brussels, get the mussels.” There are five different varieties of the steaming pots of mollusks here in both appetizer and main course sizes and three different plated presentations, including a sampler with both the garlic butter sauce and Roquefort cheese renditions. The saucy moules en casserole varieties include the classic white wine and more adventurous ones like curry sauce and spicy Moules Diable. We recommend the entrée size for the side order of Belgian frites that come alongside. No matter which you choose, the best drink pairing is one of the many Belgian beers. The space is charming and appropriate for a low-key romantic dinner, too.
