  • 429 American Grille

    13215 Grant #1800 Cypress

    281-404-4190

After finding critical acclaim but an insufficient market, Peruvian restaurant Piqueo was closed to make way for 429 American Grille. The idea was to convert it into a steak and burger place. The steak is good, especially the fillet accented with either chimichurri or the house-made steak sauce (think A-1). However, the burgers miss the mark. A buffalo burger emerged woefully overcooked (no one asked how we’d like it prepared), and while a Wagyu burger cooked to a proper medium-rare was juicy, it needed the kind of tang and pop that only pickles or roasted red bell peppers could give. It should probably be no surprise that the dishes that are exemplary here are the ones that rely on the experience and background of 429’s well-traveled owners. Perky fresh shrimp atop creamy grits accented with Spanish sherry sauce was a revelation, like sunshine breaking through clouds: a classic Southern dish viewed through a sophisticated, worldly lens. Why do we think that an “American” grill has to serve burgers and steaks? Why can’t an “American” grill reflect the diversity of Houston? If viewing common dishes through that international lens results in more dishes like the shrimp and grits with sherry sauce, consider us on board for the journey.

  • Annie's Hamburgers

10821 S. Post Oak Rd. Outer Loop - SW

    713-729-9861

After eating breakfast at Annie's - the gigantic, fluffy biscuits with sausage gravy will put you into a carb coma - you'll want to come back the same day for a cheeseburger, double meat, double cheese, extra bacon and a side of fries. This is a neighborhood classic offering food of high quality and consistency. Breakfast is simple and to the point. You can't go wrong with anything on the short list of menu items, from fluffy pancakes to super-crispy hot waffles.

  • Balls Out Burger

    1603 N. Durham Dr. Heights

Balls Out Burger looks the part its name evokes, with burgers that positively ooze beef and cheese. Unfortunately, they eat far tamer than they look. While the default burger here comes devoid of anything but beef and bun swaddled in melting American cheese, you’re better off adding some salad stuff for balance. You’ll also want to opt for the single instead of the jaw-unhinging double. The beef is flavorful and well seasoned, but comes a bit too compressed and bearing an unfortunately weak sear. Overall, Balls Out burgers look, feel and taste an awful lot like the burgers you might make at home, with decent-quality mass-market beef seared in carbon steel and blanketed with American cheese. That said, the expansive patio is a delight during nice weather, the all-Saint Arnold beer selection is a nice touch, and the shakes are homespun delights.

  • The Barking Pig

    2307 Ella Heights

    713-701-9150

The Barking Pig is a casual neighborhood bar and grill that leans more heavily on the bar end of the enterprise. Expect counter service, but feel free to grab a seat on the patio and have a runner bring your meal. With both the drinks and the food, it’s a good bet to keep things simple. The straightforward backyard cookout-style burgers are pleasant enough, as are the thin-crust pizzas. Stay away from anything that strays from the expectable model, like the truly disappointing ceviche. Don’t expect to be dazzled, but do expect to have a good time.

  • Bernie's Burger Bus

    No address listed Heights

It may look like a school bus, but it's a lean, mean, burger-grilling machine. Winner of the 2012 Houston Press Burger Bracket, Bernie's Burger Bus is the true definition of gourmet food truck, utilizing the freshest ingredients — fresh-ground Black Angus beef, freshly made baked buns, and homemade condiments — to make one of the juiciest, tastiest burgers you'll ever have the pleasure of eating. The school-themed menu features the traditional American burger "The Principal"; the double-patty, Texas-cheddar topped "The Bully"; and the famous "Study Hall" burger, topped with barbecue sauce and crispy-seared, slow-braised pork belly.

  • Biskit Junkie

    403 Westheimer Montrose

    713-688-1754

Biskit Junkie is an all-day (till 3 p.m.) breakfast and brunch concept in the heart of Montrose. No liquor license means you won’t be enjoying bottomless mimosas with your eggs Benny, but they’re not that great in the first place. For the most part, sticking to simple things served on biscuits is the way to go here. Odd standouts include the surprisingly alluring breakfast salad and the chilaquiles. The former eats like a handful of greens run deliciously through every breakfast trope you can imagine, and the latter is a simple yet satisfying brunch dish elevated by the cliché addition of a handful of fried eggs. Be forewarned that parking can be a real bear.

  • Broken Spoke Cafe

    1809 Washington Heights

    713-863-7029

This Belgian cafe known for great moules frites (mussels steamed in white wine and butter with fries) serves classic Belgium dishes like the croque monsieur (grilled ham and cheese sandwich), salade Niçoise (tuna with green beans and boiled eggs) and entrées like filet mignon. You can have the Broken Spoke burger with grilled onions, jalapeños and mushrooms for lunch or dinner, and brunch on Sundays. There's good Belgian beers like Stella Artois and Chimay, and a 15 percent discount if you show up on a bicycle. You can get your crepe fix with several combinations, such as crepes with ice cream and chocolate sauce (crepe mikado) or crepes with brown sugar (crepe casonade).

  • Bubba's Texas Burger Shack

    5230 Westpark Galleria

    713-661-1622

At Bubba's, nestled below the Westpark Tollway, you can find burgers — but why settle when there are meaty buffalo burgers and hot dogs on menus? There's good ole Shiner Bock from the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, and Jones Sodas, a line of soft drinks whose labels feature odd photos mailed in by customers. Complement your hearty burger with a side of Zapp's potato chips or some jalapeno potato salad. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 3pm to 7pm.

  • Burger Girl

    17117 Tomball Jersey Village

    281-894-6644

This Dallas import features family-friendly service that toes the line between a Hooters and a Steak 'n Shake, meaning both dad and the kids will likely be happy here. And if they aren't, sundaes for the kids and "adult milkshakes" like the Raspberry Mudslide will resolve any lingering issues. The Hangover Burger with a fried egg and "special sauce" will reinvigorate you on a Saturday afternoon if you aren't in the mood for the Burger Girl's weekend brunch, served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • The Burger Guys

    12225 Westheimer Rd. Memorial

    281-497-4897

The closest you'll come to a regular burger at this Memorial-area joint is the Houston burger, made with house-pickled bread-and-butter jalapenos and locally made cheese. But it's worth the trek out Westheimer and the sometimes mind-boggling menu (a Sydney burger with beets and a fried egg, a Saigon burger with pate and daikon radish) to experience The Burger Guys' progressive and ambitious gourmet burgers. Don't forget to order a side of Belgian frites -- duck fat fries -- with your choice of house-made dipping sauces. Top it all off with a made-to-order milkshake.
  • The Burger Joint

    2703 Montrose Montrose

    281-974-2889

On a small, patio-heavy lot on Montrose Boulevard, The Burger Joint slings classic burgers with new-classic twists alongside a handful of sandwiches, dogs and salads. The basics are well executed here, as with the archetypal classic single with cheese. Though the burgers could often use a harder turn on the griddle, and maybe a bit more fat in the mix to maximize drippage, they are cooked flawlessly to specification — a rare treat in burgerdom. If you’re feeling fancy, try the kimchi burger, with its bed of chopped fermented cabbage serving as an excellent retaining vessel for the flood of yolk from the fried egg topper. Or perhaps the Mexi, which plays salty sweet ham off lush avocado and prickly pickled jalapeño. It’s so well appointed, you’ll hardly notice the absence of melty cheese, a burger deal breaker for many. Steer clear of the burger bowls, where an overly sweet dressing drowns out the beef and renders the french fries sad and soggy. An array of well-chosen taps from near and far help the charming indoor-outdoor space feel even more like a permanent patio party. If you’re looking for a shake, the peanut butter version is a good bet, with a generous scoop of the chunky stuff helping to thicken up the otherwise runny texture of the soft-serve base.

  • Burger Park

6704 Martin Luther King Jr Dr. Outer Loop - SE

    713-733-6108

A Houston institution/dive serving up inexpensive burgers and fries for years, family-owned Burger Park has been holding its own in the oft-maligned neighborhood of South Park for some time. The service is friendly - as friendly as it can be through metal security grates - but note that the surrounding neighborhood does suffer from some crime issues.

10606 Fuqua St. Outer Loop - SE

    281-481-8606

Since the early 1980s, C&D Burger Shoppe has been a mainstay in South Houston. The old Dairy Queen turns out better burgers than you'd get at a fast-food joint, for the same price. And here, you can get a Frito pie and a grape Kool-Aid to go with your cheeseburger, along with a heady dose of nostalgia. At lunch, it's a working man's destination, but it's all sleepy small-town vibes at night.

  • Cedar Creek

    1034 W. 20th Heights

    713-808-9623

Cedar Creek Cafe is a beer-and-burger joint that calls itself a Hill Country Cafe and wishes it was in Austin. The yearning for the vibe of Texas' hipster capital is overwhelming. Take advantage of the free wi-fi — when it is free, that is — and soak in the frat element here. The excellent house java is supplied by Katz Coffee Company, and the breakfasts are excellent, even though the restaurant doesn't open until 11 a.m. on most days.

  • Christian's Tailgate Grill & Bar (Midtown)

    2000 Bagby Downtown/ Midtown

    713-527-0261

Known for their burgers, Christian's is a hot spot with the party crowd. From happy hour onward, the restaurant fills with Midtowners who come to drink beer and eat bar food. Christian's schedules regular events like karaoke night, college night and a Thursday steak night, so the vibe is usually loud and festive. The menu at Christian's is simple, with various sizes of patties available on their signature burger, a handful of salads and seafood options, chicken sandwiches, and sides of fries and onion rings. A kids' menu offers scaled-down versions of their most popular items.

  • Christian's Tailgate Grill & Bar

    7340 Washington Heights

    713-864-9744

The original Christian's Tailgate on Washington Avenue — no, not that Washington Avenue; keep heading north until you cross I-10 — is still one of the best places in the city to relax with a burger, a beer and a sports game or three (the place is filled with TV screens, large and small), even after 70 years. The beer selection has grown more impressive over time, and the rugged burgers with their hand-formed patties and ample toppings are as good as ever.

  • Doc's Bar & Grill

    1303 Westheimer Montrose

The original Doc’s opened in 2005 on South Congress Avenue in Austin, housed in a former auto-repair shop that was owned by a guy nicknamed Doc, hence the name and automotive theme. The bar expanded to two more locations in Austin and now has ventured into Houston with this location in Montrose. Doc’s serves upscale bar food such as burgers, sliders, wings, nachos, tacos, salads, and more, including an all-day breakfast menu. Craft-beer lovers will appreciate the selection of more than 50 beers on tap, including upwards of 30 from Texas. The Houston location stays true to the repair-shop theme, with garage doors that can be opened up when the weather is nice, old gas-station signs and even an old rusted-out truck parked under the sign out front. The front patio allows for good people-watching along this busy stretch of Westheimer.
