  • 5th Amendment Bar

    2900 Travis Montrose

    832-474-3394

The goal of 5th Amendment is clear: To provide a spot where fun and frivolity abound. Velvet ropes guard the door, and just slipping past the doorman is a feat in itself. Inside, a large dance floor bustles with movement, with women, liquor, and men fawning over both. Fog machines pump in a hazy atmosphere while a professional lighting rig bounces lasers around the room. Private tables, complete with bottle service, line the dance floor as well as an elevated landing overlooking all the action. The two bars inside are big enough to handle quite a crowd, and a patio is available when escaping the dancing is necessary. This one is a favorite with local rappers and visiting celebs, so you'll never know who you may be run into in the restroom.

  • AURA

    4701 Nett St. Heights

    713-965-4275

This nightclub near Washington Avenue only opens up on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, and the resident DJs play a mix of EDM, house, electro, dance, mash-ups and hip-hop for the young diverse crowds that show up. Besides the dancing, bottle service is big here with people calling in early to reserve tables for the weekend. Aura's dress code forbids T-shirts, hoodies, sneakers and more; check out the club's Web site for the full details. Most of the crowd tends to be fit and attractive; the manager we spoke with says that the patrons range from from twentysomethings up to fortysomethings.

  • Big Texas Dance Hall & Saloon -- Clear Lake

803 NASA Road 1, Webster Outside Houston

    281-461-4400

Its big sister resides out in Spring, but the Bay Area's little darlin' of a dancehall reaches its 850-person capacity on the weekends with ease. Adorned with a charming faux Old West vibe - including a coat check - and matching décor in the form of wagon wheels, stuffed foxes and many a Texas flag, Big Texas is ready for any and all boots. A sea of cowboy hats and pearl snaps fill the dance floor as DJs spin everything from Johnny Cash to the Cha Cha Slide; Thursdays, a live band gets everyone to kick up a little dust. Shy types needn't worry; Big Texas' three huge bars and a few well-stocked washtubs of beer, will help you lose those inhibitions. Or you can try your hand at the wall of video games, including the Terminator 2 pinball machine next to Big Texas' cigarette machine - smoking is still allowed inside this Webster watering hole.

  • Crystal Nightclub

6880 SW Freeway Outer Loop - SW

    713-278-2582

A Latin gay club, complete with fabulous drag queens and an uber-friendly crowd? Don't mind if we do! Crystal has been around for nearly 20 years, but this well-kept little treasure doesn't receive the same fanfare as the more visible Montrose establishments. (It's way far away from there.) The commute is worth the effort for the salsa dancing alone, even if you're just hanging out on the sidelines and taking in the view.

  • Drink Houston

7620 Katy Freeway Outer Loop - NW

    713-471-1896

Yes, Drink Houston hosts a motley crew of attendees, and yes, it enforces a severe dress code and cover charge, but it attracts a diverse crowd of people -- not hard to imagine, with five separate nightclubs under the same roof -- almost every night for one reason: Drink Houston is a fun place to be, with both great hip-hop music and drink specials.
  • El Rodeo Disco

10531 Gulf Freeway Outer Loop - SE

    713-947-0535

Passing by this spot on the Gulf Freeway feeder during daylight hours, one might think little of the El Rodeo sign unassumingly hanging in the corner of a big-box strip center. Come Friday and Saturday nights, though, El Rodeo's doors are the portal into a swirling sea of Norteño culture. (Saturdays the masses are moved via DJ, but Friday nights are all band-driven.) Not only does the massive dancehall reach its 1,600-person capacity, but also multiple adjacent parking lots are brimming with cars and trucks. While the crowd reaches critical proportions, El Rodeo's six giant bars will sate your thirst no matter how many belt buckles you are competing against. What's more, a taco truck posted outside makes a perfect late-night noshing solution when last call comes around.

  • Escapade

    281-372-1100

This place is compound of six Latin clubs spread into two buildings, which makes for plenty of space to bust a move or six. Plenty of live music too. Needless to say Escapade gets super-packed, with everything from rap to merengue and punta. Between that, the dancers, and the huge TV screens that line the walls, the dance floor is a dizzying, maddening place to be, which only adds to the allure.

  • F BAR

    702 TUAM St. Montrose

    713-522-3227

Montrose pop-up art show and performance art exhibition Houston artist to explore the surreal side of the enchanted life of bees Houston, TX May 18, 2016: To the left, to the left, Beyoncé! Another “king bee” will invade the Bayou City hive on May 20th. Gay Mexican artist Ernesto Guerra and his new series of pop-surrealist, Elizabethan-inspired portraits will get in formation at F Bar to proudly present “Enchanted Hive.” The award-winning venue will sponsor the event from 5-8 p.m. The multimedia art show will use audiovisual elements and performance art to explore the delicate balance of life through the eyes of Guerra’s feminine subjects and the bees which accompany them—quiet vehicles of metaphysical and societal exploration. The show is also a social commentary on Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), the phenomenon commonly used to explain the disappearance of honey bees, as well as a personal meditation on what life requires of us as we ascend our respective thrones in the name of duty, purpose, fate or the fulfillment of destiny. F Bar is located at 202 Tuam Street. This is a free event. All are welcome to attend.
