  • 1919 Wine and Mixology

    2736 Virginia St. Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-568-9196

A hybrid of wine and specially-curated cocktails right next door to The Oak Bar, 1919 Wine & Mixology manages to get both right. Featuring about 140 different wines from around the world, including sustainable and organic options, it also carries a full list of craft cocktails if wine ain't your thing. The decor is simply gorgeous, with a kind of antique-meets-modern elegance that creates an ambiance definitely worth a trip outside your dive-bar comfort zone.

  • The 19th Hole Grill & Bar

202 Sawdust Rd, Spring Outside Houston

    281-363-2574

Way out on the border of the Woodlands, in what is technically still Spring, lies the smoky, dimly lit 19th Hole. It's really several bars under one roof: Sports bar, neighborhood hangout, pool hall, and music venue on nights when the curtained-off back room is open. Behind the pool tables up front, any of the clustered mass of tables has a great view of the bar's many big screens; some booths have their own televisions too. Don't be surprised to hear 19th Hole's bartenders asking customers if they'd like "the usual," either.

Ideal for date night or a low-key nightcap, the low-lit lounge offers a variety of martinis, beer and wine to accompany signature "Green Fairy" cocktails such as the Hallucinating Melon, Inferno or Hemingway's Revenge. The bar seating is supplemented by some couches up front and tables in the back room.

  • Acadia Bar & Grill

3939 Cypress Creek Parkway Outer Loop - NW

    281-893-2860

This north Houston live-music venue has been around since 1982, the last three years of which have brought back the rock after a short stint as a karaoke bar. Food is served seven days a week, with Thursday designated as steak night; a Pot Luck Barbecue goes down on the patio Sundays at noon. Jack and Coke and bottled Budweiser are the drinks of choice here, though the owner says flavored vodkas and martinis have been added for the ladies. A few craft beers are on tap as well, but music is the main draw here. Hard rock and metal acts play live Wednesdays through Saturdays and most Sundays, taking advantage of Acadia's impressive light show and sound system. If music is not your thing, stop by Thursday nights for the foosball tournaments or Mondays for the pool league. The owner says Acadia always has a laid-back atmosphere and friendly customer service, crediting this to his 16 years experience working at House of Blues. Smoking is allowed inside, due to one of those Harris County districting plans we don’t quite understand.

  • Alice's Tall Texan Drive Inn

    4904 N. Main Heights

    713-862-0141

Contrary to popular belief, Alice's Tall Texan sells more than just 18-ounce Shiner and Lone Star beers in giant fishbowl-shaped goblets. Although those two drinks are popular choices among many patrons, no doubt, the bar also serves a number of domestic beers in bottles as well as a handful of Mexican imports and Gallo wines. Setups are also available if you'd prefer to bring in your own bottle of wine or a bottle of liquor. The old jukebox packed with classic country favorites for many years has now been replaced with an Internet model, but have no fear, when we visited on a recent afternoon the regulars still played those old-time favorites. (The Tall Texan's large Hispanic clientele also likes to play salsa, Tejano, and norteño as well, which was not available on the old jukebox.) This neighborhood bar is a very friendly, welcoming place no matter your background or age; don't be surprised if strangers offer to buy you beers all night. There is a table by the jukebox where patrons bring in food to share with everyone in the bar, you can help yourself to it or bring in food for yourself if you like. Alice still runs the place and is very nice, just don't upset her by putting your feet up on her tables. And guys, she does not permit sleeveless shirts in her place.

  • ALJ Bar/Lounge

    711 Franklin St. Downtown/ Midtown

    832-779-3155

  • Alley Kat Bar & Lounge

    3718 Main St. Downtown/ Midtown

Although a sign above the entrance still reads "The Mink," little inside this newly renovated drinkery feels quite the same. The layout is unchanged, but burgundy walls, low lighting and the soft sounds of jazz or blues now set the tone of The Alley Kat Bar and Lounge, the newest watering hole on "The Island" in Midtown. The Alley Kat feels as though it has outgrown its awkward albeit charming teenage years, giving way to a fresh perspective on a well-liked Midtown nightspot that had deteriorated over time. The Mink used to have an allure all its own, but over the past few years it became seedier and dustier, and the restrooms became more of a risk than a convenience.

  • Anderson Fair Retail Restaurant

    2007 Grant Montrose

    832-767-2785

Anderson Fair's inconspicuous location on Grant Street belies its history as one of the nation's oldest and longest-running singer-songwriter venues. It's a past that's hard to forget, as the walls are plastered with hundreds of posters, flyers and photographs of folks who have graced the main room's small stage, including legends Townes Van Zandt and Lyle Lovett. (Look closely and you'll even spot a pair of gold records from Lovett himself.) The cash-only bar serves an array of beer and wine while you take in an intimate performance from some highway-trotting troubadour, and you'll feel the history seeping into your skin.

  • Anvil Bar & Refuge

    1424 Westheimer Montrose

    713-523-1622

Anvil Bar & Refuge is like the Jay-Z of Houston bars. It can do no wrong, from the food to the drinks to the skill of the bartenders. Since opening in mid-2009, it has become the standard by which most other local bars define themselves. They either want to be better than Anvil, or not as supposedly "snooty" or "posh" as they think it is. Either one is a sign of the impact the Westheimer drinkery has had. You can't drive three blocks inside the Loop without finding a new gastropub either tweaking Anvil's concept or stealing it outright. Anvil makes drinks the way they should be made, with homemade ingredients, craft liquors, loving care, and no soda nozzles or Red Bull.

  • Ashford Pub

    13308 Westheimer Rd. Memorial

    281-679-6112

Want to hang out at a legit Irish pub this St Patty's Day, but can't fathom flying to the other side of the world to do it? Well, we have the answer to that quandary. It's a west side bar called Ashford Pub, and it is dark, dank, and awesome. It's a legit Irish pub with legit Irish owners, in a very non-Irish part of the world. What could be better than that? Not much, unless you throw in some free food. Oh wait, they have that too. They also have dirt-cheap drinks, rad bartenders, and around 20 flippin' beers on tap, which is obviously fantastic.

  • Ava Kitchen & Whiskey Bar

    2800 Kirby Dr. Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-386-6460

This little sister restaurant to RDG + Bar Annie is only one part of the Robert Del Grande empire here in West Ave: There's also a related pizzeria upstairs, Alto. As its name would suggest, the whiskey selection here is vast and the Manhattans are solidly constructed. There's a small, snack-based bar menu if you're just there for the whiskey and the view (both of the well-appointed interior and its well-heeled crowd), and you're best sticking to it instead of diving into the sloppy, overpriced main menu.
