  • Buffalo Wild Wings

    3939 Washington Ave. Heights

    832-356-2980

Buffalo Wild Wings was founded in 1982 when a guy from Buffalo, New York traveled to Ohio to judge an amateur figure skating competition and failed to find any wings that measured up to the ones at home. Now B-Dubs, as it likes to call itself, has spread to nearly every state in the U.S. with more than 600 locations, including Houston, where it's easy to find on Voice Places. The yellow-and-black logo features a buffalo that has sprouted majestic wings, but make no mistake--it's strictly chicken here, available in regular or boneless varieties in 21 flavors from Garlic Parmesan and Caribbean Jerk to Asian Zing and the simply named but much feared Blazin'. Every location features a plethora of televisions for your sports-watching needs and a plentiful selection of beer on tap.

  • Anderson Fair Retail Restaurant

    2007 Grant Montrose

    832-767-2785

Anderson Fair's inconspicuous location on Grant Street belies its history as one of the nation's oldest and longest-running singer-songwriter venues. It's a past that's hard to forget, as the walls are plastered with hundreds of posters, flyers and photographs of folks who have graced the main room's small stage, including legends Townes Van Zandt and Lyle Lovett. (Look closely and you'll even spot a pair of gold records from Lovett himself.) The cash-only bar serves an array of beer and wine while you take in an intimate performance from some highway-trotting troubadour, and you'll feel the history seeping into your skin.

    713-426-9035

Beer Market Company has thrown down the gauntlet to beer bars across Houston by offering up more than 365 different brews; customers can drop in and have a different beer here every day of the year. The manager we spoke with mentioned they are thinking of coming up with some kind of prize for patrons who accomplish this feat. Most beers here are bottled, with 24 on draft and further options coming soon. Besides the jaw-dropping beer selection, the food here has also been a hit, with the “Mac ‘N Cheese Burger” and the “Brew Pretzels with Real Ale 'Hans Pils' Cheese Dip” among the favorites. The place is also a sports bar, with 30 TVs spread out across the place including several outside on the spacious wrap-around patio. Beer Market is a dog-friendly establishment, and plans to add more locations throughout the city in the future.

Located in north downtown, Bitterman's Market Square Bar & Grill is a relaxed restaurant featuring burgers, salads and beer. The restaurant claims to have captured the ambiance of a Chicago or Philadelphia-style neighborhood bar, then given it a Texas twist with menu items like quesadillas and fajita salad. Television stationed throughout the restaurant allow diners to watch the game, and free wireless internet is available. The large back patio - an anomaly downtown - makes Bitterman's a popular choice for after-work happy hours.

    510 Shepherd Heights

    713-863-7777

Branch Water Tavern is a great example of a uniquely American restaurant style that features a well-stocked bar and simple meat and seafood dishes that don't have French names. In many ways, the Heights-area new American tavern is a throwback to early American eateries. The menu includes oysters on the half shell, crab cakes, venison medallions, beefsteak and smoke-roasted pork chops - items that were just as common on the menus of American taverns of the 18th century.

  • Cafe Luxor Hookah Bar & Grill

    3730 Washington Ave. Heights

    713-864-0000

This Egyptian-themed cafe, bar and hookah lounge features Egyptian murals painted by a local Heights artist throughout the building and patio, the highlight being the painting of King Tut and the pyramids behind the performance stage. Cafe Luxor serves up a variety of liquors, wines and beers, including six different varieties of beers from Houston's Karbach Brewing Company. The hookah has a local connection as well, as a large number of the 75-plus favored tobaccos offered come from the Haze Tobacco company in Stafford. An international food menu includes Mediterranean and Persian dishes as well as American bar food like pizzas, burgers and wings; the lemon-pepper wings are a customer favorite, according to the food and beverages manager we spoke with. Italian coffee imported from Italy is also available along with a variety of energy drinks, as well as Dom Pérignon champagne for that special occasion. Luxor calls itself the place “Where The Fun Never Stops,” and to prove it offers a weekly schedule of events that includes open-mike night, karaoke, live music and live belly dancers who mix things up by sometimes dancing with swords, fire and snakes. All ages are welcome at Luxor, which stays open until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, serving coffee, hookah and food after hours until closing.
  • Camerata at Paulie's

    1834 Westheimer Rd. Lower Shepherd-Kirby

One of Houston's newest wine bars is also one of its best. Situated next to the neighborhood Italian restaurant Paulie's, Camerata draws a diverse crowd of industry folk, wine aficionados and average joes who enjoy a good glass of bubbly. Or Syrah. Or Riesling. The bartenders and sommeliers at Camerata know their product, and they're happy to recommend a glass or a bottle in whatever style and genre a customer might want. They're even great at introducing newbies and experts alike to new wines they might never have heard of or tasted. And if you get a bit peckish after all that wine, Camerata stocks Paulie's sandwiches and an array of meats and cheeses to sate your appetite. Oh, and did we mention the wine?

Take advantage of the free wi-fi — when it is free, that is — and soak in the frat element here. • Colorado Bar & Grill

6710 SW Freeway Outer Loop - SW

    713-781-1122

Do you like a good Philly cheesesteak or pollo poblano with your boobs? What we're saying here is that, besides the lovely ladies gracing the club's three main stages, there's a bountiful menu. And if for some reason you need a break from looking at half-naked gyrating young females, the Colorado offers billiards, tabletop video games and Golden Tee. From its old-school-Vegas-style sign to its super-friendly staff, the Colorado has a look and feel quite unlike that at other places where ladies twirl on poles in clear high heels for strangers. Some gentlemen's clubs tend to go overboard on creating an illusion of exclusivity; the Colorado is laid-back and lacks pretense. Who knows? You might even become a regular.

  • Community Bar

    2703 Smith Montrose

    713-526-1576

Community Bar's atmosphere caters toward more mature adults. Meaning that it is neat and quaint without a lot of cutesy ironic stuff on the walls. It sometimes gets forgotten in the Midtown bar mix, which is a shame. It boasts a stellar bar food menu that fuses several different types of cuisine. The bar's Tuesday steak nights are the truth, and the stuff that Wednesday lunches are made of due to the portion sizes.

  • Cork Grinders

    206 W. Texas Ave. Baytown

    281-427-3260

Baytown's first wine and coffee bar, Cork Grinders is a popular spot to kick back and relax with a cold—or hot!—one. Boasting exposed brick walls and ductwork accented by cozy couches and a smattering of tables, the vibe at Cork Grinders is equally gritty and comfortable. What you'll encounter upon arriving at this cozy cafe depends on the time of day. In the morning, for example, you'll see baristas behind the counter doling out fresh espresso, lattes, and breakfast sandwiches to patrons stopping by during the pre-work rush. As the sun sets, Cork Grinders makes its nightly transformation into a hip wine bar, where regulars congregate to choose from more than 80 different wines and an equally impressive number of locally brewed craft beers. Pair your libation with a cheese plate or a slice of molten lava chocolate cake. Cork Grinders is open Mondays through Saturdays. Live music takes place every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening.

    2408 Strand Galveston

    409-766-9995

This colorful party bar on the Strand in Galveston is popular with locals, tourists and bikers; the Lone Star Bike Rally brings in a ton of people, according to one of the regulars we spoke with. The only drinks available are beer and wine, while the bar food includes burgers, pizza, sandwiches, wings and nachos. Crow's is an interesting place to walk around and take a look at when you visit; lots of curious items attached to the walls and everywhere else, like a motorcycle made out of wicker and giant Mardi Gras beads, as well as a wall of T-shirts for sale to the tourists. Live music is big here seven days a week, with karaoke on Mondays, acoustic jam sessions on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, open-mike on Thursdays, bands on Fridays and Saturdays, and jam sessions on Sundays.

  • Darwin's Pub

    33 Waugh Dr. Heights

    713-992-0396

The owner says he named Darwin's Theory after his favorite bar in Alaska, and that the name also reflects his desire to see the Washington Avenue corridor customer base evolve from suburban nightclub-hoppers into residential neighborhood-bar patrons. No kind of political statement on the creationism/evolution debate is intended, and all fun-seekers are welcome. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the fantastic artwork painted on the walls which looks like some of the best graffiti you have ever seen, including a giant chimp decked out like Che Guevara with the words “Viva La Evolucion” scrawled above it. People are invited to bring in their dogs and their children; the dogs are free to stay all night but the kids have to leave by 10 p.m. Darwin's serves classic cocktails as well as trendy drinks like Moscow Mules, plus Houston and greater Texas regional craft beers on tap in 18 oz recyclable plastic cups. Dirt-cheap Natural Light in cans is also available, as well as uncommon drinks not normally found in Houston bars, like King Cobra 40s and stereotypical wino favorites Mad Dog 20/20 and Thunderbird. Cards, board games, and Foosball are available to play while watching cartoons on the TVs and eating upscale bar food, and plans are underway for pool, air hockey and Street Fighter 2 tournaments.
