  • Cafe Piquet

5757 Bissonnet Outer Loop - SW

    713-664-1031

This home-style Cuban cooking features some noteworthy fish offerings, but the standouts are dishes like ethereal fried pork chunks, picadillo, breaded steak, yucca with garlic sauce, black beans and rice. This is Cuban comfort food of the highest order.

  • El Meson

    2425 University Blvd. Kirby-West U

    713-522-9306

This longtime Village eatery allows you to tour Spain and its colonies. Traditional Spanish tapas and paellas find their place next to Cuban dishes like ropa vieja and picadillo a la criolla and Mexican dishes like fajitas and enchiladas. With its dark wood and booths lining the walls, the spacious restaurant has the feel of a taverna. The extensive wine list includes choices from the New World as well as the Old.

  • El Rey Taqueria

    910 Shepherd Heights

    713-802-9145

El Rey is a terrific Cuban/Mexican restaurant masquerading as a fast-food joint. Sure, you eat with plastic utensils on blue plastic cafeteria trays. The food does arrivs very fast, but this is anything but fast food. This stuff has soul and flavor -- lots of flavor. A huge old-fashioned rotisserie roasts beautiful, golden-skinned chickens that turn up in soups, sandwiches, tacos and burritos -- and that also stand alone quite well, thank you. Good accompaniments, too: nicely flavored Mexican rice with good-sized chunks of carrot and deeply-spiced refried beans.

  • El Sazon de Cuba - CLOSED

16618 Clay Rd. Outer Loop - NW

    832-427-5047

At El Sazon de Cuba, the food is hot, the music is cool and a chill Miami vibe permeates the small, modest restaurant. Owner Julio Iglesias moved here from Miami, but his family is Cuban, and he grew up eating the food he now serves at his restaurant. The menu features Cuban classics like ropa vieja, enchilado de pescado, filete relleno and, of course, the Cubano sandwich. Newcomers to Cuban cuisine should try the Cubano here, as it's a perfect representation of what a Cuban sandwich should be. Other highlights are the home-made flan and the unique Cuban pizza, topped with cheese and ham. The best thing about El Sazon de Cuba, though, is the family who welcomes customers with open arms and plates full of food. They want you to love Cuba as much as they do, and they're going to convince you to do so through their food.
  • Flor De Cuba

16233 Clay Rd. Outer Loop - NW

    281-463-8611

What this family-owned Cuban restaurant and bakery lacks in atmosphere, it more than makes up for in food. A wide variety of traditional, authentic Cuban dishes made in an open kitchen draws many Cubans. The empanadas are homemade and come in four varieties, all worth trying. Also recommended are the ropa vieja (shredded beef in a tomato sauce), the roast pork and the shrimp in garlic sauce, all served with outstanding rice and black beans and plantains.

  • Latina Café

    1972 Fairview River Oaks

    713-521-2611

This Cuban cafe started humbly as a grocery store that also served food, and the place hasn't lost its humility. A favorite entrée is the pescado asado, a beautifully fresh tilapia fillet seasoned with cumin and grilled until crispy. Texans who appreciate chicken-fried steak will love the bistec empanisado, but the vaca frita is more exotic. Beef brisket is cooked and shredded, then fried. It looks a little plain on the plate, but the dish isn't about looks; it's about flavors and textures.
