  • Red Cat Jazz Cafe

    711 Franklin St. Downtown/ Midtown

    713-226-7870

Even if you don't know Miles Davis from Buddy Miles or John Coltrane from John Legend (or jazz fusion from fusion cooking, for that matter), there's something about being in a jazz club that automatically makes you feel more, well, sophisticated. Downtown's Red Cat Jazz Café, though, offers uptown sophistication with a down-home Southern twist and spacious brick-wall acoustics that ensure you never miss a (blue) note. Several of the Red Cat's resident artists — elder-statesman vocalist Ardis Turner and New Orleans native/Patti LaBelle duet partner Mary Griffin — play jazz that, like Houston itself, has been heavily infiltrated by blues, R&B and soul. And don't forget to eat — the Red Cat's Louisiana-flavored menu (pricey, but worth it) and full bar will fill your belly as satisfyingly as the music fills your ears.

  • 3-6-9 Oriental Bistro

    1009 Westheimer Montrose

    713-524-8686

While this place is clean, modern and serene, a bistro it is not. Sill, the small restaurant in a strip mall has been around for quite a while and does a good takeout business. There are some dishes that are worthwhile, like the Sesame Seaweed Salad, the Crispy Shrimp With Walnuts and the Chicken Wraps.

  • 888 Chinese Restaurant

403 Winkler Dr. Outer Loop - SE

    713-644-8888

888 is a big square room with booths down both sides, tables in the middle and two television sets high on the wall at one end. The clientele includes a lot of Mexican-Americans, and the menu includes some Chinese-Mexican combos like whole mojarra with shrimp fried rice. The mango chicken in garlic sauce is easily the best thing on the menu. It's a tropical-tasting dish that seems only vaguely Chinese.

    (713) 899-1572

  • Afrikiko

9625 Bissonnet Outer Loop - SW

    713-773-1400

Afrikiko is about as close to a bona fide African experience (an experience, by the way, that usually includes soccer on the eatery's satellite TV) as you're going to get here in the States. Owned by a Ghanaian family, the eatery that's inconspicuously tucked behind a Burger King makes authentic fufu (the thick-paste, doughy-like staple of that particular region of the planet) with goat meat, palm nut soup and jollof rice. If you don't see your favorite dish on the menu, such as red-red stew, the restaurateurs will gladly make it for you. Additionally, if you're an obruni (the Twi language term for "white person"), the cooks are conscious enough to tame down the hot factor. So if you like it spicy, tell them and you'll be sweating like mad, much like you would be on a hot day under the African sun.

  • Aladdin Mediterranean Cuisine

    912 Westheimer Montrose

    713-942-2321

Exotic decor and an atmosphere reminiscent of Morocco set the scene at Aladdin. In the back of the restaurant, there's a tiny, cozy, private booth-lined room. The restaurant's excellent mezze, or sampler platter, features at least eight or ten different Middle Eastern items. The grilled-to-order kebabs, shawarma, tabbouleh and smoky baba ghanoush are exceptional. Aladdin's puffy pita bread is made on the premises in a brick oven; don't miss the oregano-sesame version known as zatar.

  • Arnaldo Richards' Picos

    3601 Kirby Dr. Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-662-8383

Located in the heart of Upper Kirby at the corner of Kirby and Richmond, Arnaldo Richard's Picos (formerly known as Pico's Mex-Mex) by chef Arnaldo Richards is a Houston destination for traditional regional Mexican cuisine. The attractively appointed, newly constructed space, replaced the restaurant's former location in Bellaire, which was open since 1984. Pico's is a popular place that doesn't take reservations. Expect waits of 30 minutes or more at peak times, so order one of their famous margaritas at the bar. Standout dishes on the large menu include the chiles en nogada, the conchinita pibil, and the Chamorro de Puerco con Verdolagas (pork shank in green sauce with vegetables). A live harpist and/or guitarist plays traditional Mexican music daily during dinner service.

  • Ashiana

Evening dinner service is also available, which includes options such as lamb chop masala, tandoori chicken and house specialties, such as the Ashiana Feast, a hearty platter for two that includes samples of various entrees with a side of naan, soup or salad and dessert.
  • Ava Kitchen & Whiskey Bar

    2800 Kirby Dr. Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-386-6460

This little sister restaurant to RDG + Bar Annie is only one part of the Robert Del Grande empire here in West Ave: There's also a related pizzeria upstairs, Alto. As its name would suggest, the whiskey selection here is vast and the Manhattans are solidly constructed. There's a small, snack-based bar menu if you're just there for the whiskey and the view (both of the well-appointed interior and its well-heeled crowd), and you're best sticking to it instead of diving into the sloppy, overpriced main menu.
  • Avenue Grill

    1017 Houston Ave. Heights

    713-228-5138

Cops, reporters, lawyers and other folks who frequent the police station and the municipal courthouse have made this steam-table diner a lunchtime institution. The people-watching is great: Downtown business types rubbing shoulders with folks in African-inspired tribal garb. • Azteca's Margarita Bar and Grill

    2207 Richmond Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-526-1702

Azteca's, on Richmond near Montrose, is an interesting blend of cantina and sports bar, with TVs competing with loud music and shouting people. The place specializes in drinks - happy hour is a big deal here - but it also has a large and varied menu. Its chunky, oniony salsa and flour tortillas are noteworthy. You will find not only the standard Tex-Mex offerings here but also legendary fish tacos, an excellent pork tenderloin stuffed with olives, jalapeños and cheese, and a delicious grilled red snapper served in a garlic white-wine sauce. There's also a good selection of vegetarian dishes.

The wild sushi rolls and tasty robata-grilled fish are standouts at this Downtown location of Japanese and sushi restaurant Azuma. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, Azuma on the Lake's chef will prepare five-, seven- and nine-course tasting menus. The Lobster Ceviche Salad and Hamachi & Yuzu Chili are excellent examples of the chef's creativity, while the Ocean and Orzo dish, consisting of peppered shrimp and scallops prepared with bacon, cheese and corn, adds a new twist to standard ingredients.

    5600 Kirby Kirby-West U

    713-432-9649

Azuma's dining room is impressively decorated with raw wood beams and lighting fixtures that look like one-of-a-kind handmade paper sculptures. The wild sushi rolls and tasty robata-grilled fish are standouts. And don't miss the cook-it-yourself Kobe beef. While this Rice Village Japanese restaurant is long on atmosphere, the clientele is casual--lots of college students in T-shirts and doctors in scrubs.
  • Baba Yega

    2607 Grant Montrose

    713-522-0042

This cozy cafe, named after a Slavic witch, has been a favorite ever since Montrose was the capital of Bohemian culture. The converted bungalow, with patio seating and a lush herb garden, serves artist types, workers and families. Like its clientele, the food is a mixed bag of deli, home cooking and vegetarian cuisine. Winners include the Caesar, topped with grilled chicken and charred red peppers, and the grilled vegetables over herbed brown rice. The best bet, however, is the huge char-grilled burger, served with a side of Baba Yega's famous dill potato salad.
