With a capacity of about 2,750, Sharpstown's Arena Theatre is the redheaded stepchild of Houston music venues. Even with all the competition it has these days, the Arena manages to keep the lights on most nights out of the month. Its calendar is constantly crowded with music across a wide variety of styles, including R&B, blues, country, rap, Latin and rock, plus comedy, boxing and MMA fighting. The seats are comfortable, the concessions are reasonable (even the cocktails), the sound is clean, the rotating stage never ceases to be a novelty and the gallery of posters for past shows in the walkway leading from the parking garage is second to none.

The 10,000-square-foot store houses close to 350 machines, from new and classic video games and pinball machines to jukeboxes, air hockey tables and more. Come to shop or join them for Pac Man Fever, where they open up game play from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m for only $15 at the door (open the first and last Friday of the month). They also offer a full service repair center.

Founders Tom Stell and Leighza Walker started the nonprofit Obsidian Art Space in 2010 as a way to promote original work, and they've done just that. The Heights venue provides a space for visual and performance art, as well as outreach programs. The space has become very busy, and is often booked for up to a year in advance. Aspiring artists can be a part of Obsidian's various classes for kids and adults.

Alamo Drafthouse has long been known as a great spot to catch a movie with a glass of cold craft beer delivered right to your seat during the film. Both area locations -- the other one is near Katy -- recently upped their games by adding cocktails and creating a menu that's much more restaurant than movie theater in terms of selection and quality. Though some appetizers miss the mark, the pizzas and burgers are the stars of the show, making use of fresh ingredients and simple preparation to delight diners from the previews through the credits. With the simple system of writing down your order and flagging it for the servers to see, food is prepared and delivered throughout the course of the movie by nearly invisible waiters trying their best to stay quiet and out of site. And let's face it, few things pair with movies like booze, so the craft margaritas and spiked shakes are a welcome addition to any moviegoing experience.

Although a sign above the entrance still reads "The Mink," little inside this newly renovated drinkery feels quite the same. The layout is unchanged, but burgundy walls, low lighting and the soft sounds of jazz or blues now set the tone of The Alley Kat Bar and Lounge, the newest watering hole on "The Island" in Midtown. The Alley Kat feels as though it has outgrown its awkward albeit charming teenage years, giving way to a fresh perspective on a well-liked Midtown nightspot that had deteriorated over time. The Mink used to have an allure all its own, but over the past few years it became seedier and dustier, and the restrooms became more of a risk than a convenience.
