  • Black Hole Coffee House

    4504 Graustark St. Montrose

    713-528-0653

It's not every coffee shop that also sells wine, beer and food from local bakers and chefs. Montrose's Black Hole Coffee House does, though. It's a huge hit with area residents, too, the airy, low-slung space nearly always filled with St. Thomas students and people taking a break from doing laundry next door. The interior of the former convenience store is littered with visually striking artwork and furniture, and the fact that it’s tucked back in a residential area means it’s quieter than other neighborhood coffee houses.

  • Bohemeo's

    708 Telephone Rd. East End

    713-923-4277

Beloved East End gathering spot Bohemeo's is known for its lush patio, live music, coffee and open-mike nights thanks to former owners and local artists Lupe and Sid Olivares. Current owners Kent Marshall (also of TK Bitterman's and Market Square Bar & Grill) and Keith Adkins of Fontana Coffee Roasters introduced some changes when they took over, and the changes suited Bohemeo's well. In addition to coffee, Bohemeo's also offers a tap wall of all-local craft beers. The small food menu offers excellent fish tacos with a creamy, spicy sauce; individual-size pizzas on a whole wheat crust; and daily specials like a Swiss chard quiche made with chard from The Last Organic Outpost. There are plenty of options for vegetarians, too, which can be tough to find in the East End. And thanks to Adkins, the coffee program at this sprawling coffeehouse is appropriately excellent..

  • Boomtown Coffee

    242 W. 19th St. Heights

    713-862-7018

Owner Matt Toomey roasts all of his own beans at Boomtown Coffee - so if you don't like the roast, you can take it up with the man who served it to you. You likely will, though, which is why Toomey also sells his beans to take home at this little Heights coffee shop, along with breakfast pastries, quiches, cupcakes and more from local bakers. During the week, food trucks often roll up to the coffee shop's old storefront entrance on 19th Street.

  • Catalina Coffee

    2201 Washington Heights

    713-861-8448

This is not a corporate caffeine factory - Catalina prides itself on expertly crafted coffee drinks. There's not much outdoor seating, but the interior is warm and library-like, with big windows that look out on the part of Washington Avenue that has yet to be invaded by frat bars. The espresso selection rotates regularly and pastries are available. This is definitely a place for those who would step into Starbucks during only the most dire caffeine emergencies.

This Third Ward coffeehouse/art space also offers breakfast, lunch and dinner — albeit in limited portions. Breakfast at Doshi features pastries and other goods from local bakers, while lunch offers a small selection of paninis, soups and salads. Dinner is one filling, vegetarian meal per night — a Thai red curry one night or Indian butter "chicken" the next — and is very inexpensive. Fresh juices and smoothies are available throughout the day, and the cozy space invites you to kick back, relax and enjoy the calm, quiet atmosphere.

    713-523-7775

It's a haven for creatives looking for a bit of refreshment, be that beer and wine or coffee and tea, open seven days a week, every day of the year. The cooler is stocked with loads of icy brews from around the Gulf Coast, including some hard-to-find Louisiana beers, and the extensive sake menu has a selection of tasting flights. All of the music is local, and ranges from DJ sets, jazz combos, light rock offerings so it's not too intrusive.

  • Morningstar

    4721 N. Main Heights

    832-806-1115

Morningstar is David Buehrer’s reimagining of the neighborhood cafe. It starts with coffee and doughnuts, but that tells only part of the story. The coffee is consistently excellent, as should be expected of the man behind Greenway Coffee and Blacksmith. The doughnuts stumbled at first, but have hit their stride with intriguing flavor combinations and concepts. Don’t miss the salted lime and chile pineapple fritter, with its funky fruity flavor and burst of salty chile heat. Morningstar also incorporates a wide-ranging tea program, with a heavy focus on matcha. The ceremonial green tea shows up across the menu, from a selection of options that frame the tea through the lens of espresso beverages and an utterly beguiling spin on Vietnamese iced coffee in the matcha sua da, to a matcha frosted raised and glazed doughnut. Elsewhere, rice bowls and inventive “cereal” options showcase the international flavors that provide much of Houston’s dining spark. Don’t miss the kaleidoscopic flavors and textures of the Valrhona Chia pudding, an unexpectedly delightful vegan offering. Likewise the Moneycat potatoes. Crispy fried with tender and earthy sweet interiors, the potatoes come glazed with funky gochujang, drizzled with zippy Kewpie mayo and showered with aromatic herbs. More than any of the menu items, though, Morningstar is a place whose focus is on accommodation. It has what you want, and wants you to treat it as you will. Have a drink, have a bite, have a meal. In the grand tradition of neighborhood cafes, Morningstar mostly wants to make you feel at home, and it succeeds mightily.

  • New York Coffee Shop

9724 Hillcroft Outer Loop - SW

    713-723-5879

This place has it all: Manhattan ambience, great bagels and a dainty Reuben, too. Unlike the open-faced monstrosities served at many delis, you can actually pick up the Reuben at New York Bagel & Coffee Shop and eat it with your hands. But the best noontime meal is something called a Triple Salad Plate. It's a scoop of tuna salad, chicken salad, egg salad or chopped liver along with tomatoes, onions and lettuce with a toasted bagel. The chopped liver is terrific, and the bagels, fresh from the bakery next door, are sensational. Grab a dozen from the Meyerland location to take home.

  • Rosinka Wine & Tea House

    2509 Rice Blvd. Kirby-West U

    832-509-9464

Located in Rice Village, Rosinka offers wines mostly from France and Italy, but a few from the Americas, made by small producers; these are not the kinds of wines you will find in big grocery-store chains or liquor stores. It also sells high-quality teas from China with no blends or added flavors, as well as French Cafe, Jamaican-style and organic Colombian coffee. There is food as well, which Rosinka describes as a Russian, French and Italian fusion; meat and chicken pies are among the favorites. Sweets sold here include lemon cream cheesecake and apple turnovers; join the wine and tea club to receive retail discounts and attend member-exclusive events like wine tastings.
