  • Houston Zoo

    6200 Hermann Park Dr. Kirby-West U

    713-533-6500

The Houston Zoo is one of the cheapest and most democratic of local attractions (despite being a top-notch facility, as far as zoos go), and one of the few places in the heart of town where one can see lots of tourists, both foreign and domestic. The animals are pretty great, too, with everything from the popular sea lions to the creepy-crawly stuff in the humid confines of the reptile house. If you've got young kids, throw them in the dolphin strollers and make a day of it. If you're just planning a trip with grown-ups, forget your pride for a minute and take a ride on the miniature train that takes off from just outside the entrance gates and circles Hermann Park.

Scream World, located on the north side near Greenspoint, has been in business for more than 15 years. The owners have mastered every aspect of it, from the wait in line to the girl with the dead baby in one hand and the machete in the other. Seriously, rehydrate yourself after you leave, because this is one of the best haunted houses to visit come Halloween time, and you're likely to pee your pants.

  • Art Palace

    3913 Main St. Third Ward

    281-501-2964

Arturo Palacios's ballsy decision continues to pay off. In early 2010, the gallerist relocated Art Palace from Austin to a ground-floor space of Midtown's Isabella Court. Today, the gallery that represents some of Houston's best contemporary artists like Seth Alverson and Elaine Bradford also presents repeat-visit-worthy shows on a monthly basis. Additionally, the space has hosted sonic events such as the experimental music No Idea Festival and presented a number of pop-up exhibits and film shindigs around town.

  • Blue Hole Regional Park

100 Blue Hole Rd., Wimberley Austin

    512-660-9111

In 2005, the City of Wimberley embarked on a mission to save the Blue Hole from the threat of residential development. After an unprecedented fundraising effort, the land was purchased by the City for use as a community park. The City has developed the newly acquired 126-acre park for the enjoyment of residents, visitors, and future generations. It includes much needed recreational facilities for our growing community. The park includes approximately 3.5 miles of trails, picnic areas, a community pavilion, playscape, basketball court, sand volleyball court, amphitheater, and the Blue Hole Swimming Area. The entire park is open to visitors within the regular operating hours, however swimming is only allowed during the designated swimming season. The park balances the needs of the community while preserving and restoring the historic Blue Hole and surrounding ecosystems. The City hired Design Workshop to design the park that was originally envisioned in a master plan led by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in 2006.
