  • Bistro Menil

    1533 W. Alabama Montrose

    713-904-3537

Located steps away from the Menil Collection, the museum that houses the impressive and valuable private art collection of founders John and Dominique de Menil, this newly opened bistro is a casual place with an approachable, reasonably priced menu. There are actually four different menus here, depending on when you visit: a weekend brunch menu, lunch and dinner menu, afternoon menu, and an extensive dessert menu. A wide variety of European-inspired but American fare is available, including salads, pizza, duck rillettes, eggplant “fries,” french toast, three-egg omelets, pear upside-down cake, white chocolate custard and much more. Also here is an impressive collection of draft beer, many from local breweries, as well as a cask wine program that is a more sustainable, green alternative because it reduces shipping and packaging costs; wine is kept in stainless steel containers with nitrogen to help preserve it.

  • Charivari Restaurant

    2521 Bagby St. Montrose

    713-521-7231

Chef Johann Schuster has been serving an always-stunning blend of European cuisines at Charivari for the last decade; the name of the Midtown restaurant — which means "beautiful, good mix" in French – doesn't lie. You'll find everything from Italian bucatini and Austrian schnitzel to Romanian goulash and German spaetzle on his standard menu, but seasonal favorites include white asparagus and black bear. Yes, bear. Desserts are made in-house like everything else, and the fully stocked bar makes a great happy-hour destination if busy bars aren't your cup of tea. The service here is old-school to go along with the Continental atmosphere, but everything about Charivari is warm and friendly.

This gem of a place, located in an old house, offers a varied cuisine with American, Greek, Italian and Middle Eastern dishes. Even though the restaurant is split into two parts, it remains very noisy when full, which it often is. The lunch menu features sandwiches, wraps, soups and salads. The dinner menu offers many chef's specials, such as the excellent beef burgundy, the chicken St. George with roasted poblano sauce and the linguine Genovese with olives, mushrooms and capers in a white wine sauce. They also offer a great weekend brunch menu.

  • Feast

    219 Westheimer Montrose

    713-529-7788

Although its chefs — Richard Knight and James Silk — are well-known for cooking the kind of nose-to-tail British cuisine they learned under Fergus Henderson, there are actually far more dishes on Feast's menu than pork heart tartare, lamb tongue and beef sweetbreads (although those are all reliably excellent options). Vegetarians will take comfort in a dish of roasted portobello mushrooms with braised lentils and goat cheese, while pescatarians will enjoy a pan-fried filet of Gulf tuna. The wine and beer lists are short but stellar, and cocktails are well-made. Dessert is also a must here, with sticky toffee pudding standing out as the best in town.

  • Fuad's

    6100 Westheimer Galleria

    713-785-0130

Imagine continental cuisine served without irony, a place where a comfortable darkness settles over everything and your major light source is the flaming dishes prepared tableside. At Fuad's, there are no menus; instead, the wait staff arrives, asking, "What do you feel like eating tonight? I can make you a fillet of beef with a cracked black pepper sauce, the best rack of lamb in town, veal chops with artichokes and mushrooms or roast duck with black-cherry sauce." (Please note that all items are "gourmet food" circa 1975.) First-rate lobster bisque is rich, creamy, redolent of brandy and loaded with sweet pieces of lobster, while shrimp scampi is fresh and nicely seasoned with garlic and basil.

  • The Melting Pot

    6100 Westheimer Galleria

    713-532-5011

Fondue has fallen in and out of fashion ever since the 1960s. It's currently trendy enough, however, to support this chain of Melting Pot locations in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Houston's location is nestled in an upper Westheimer strip center. The typical feast spans four courses, including a cheese fondue appetizer. For dessert, you can dip bits of brownie, pound cake, cheesecake or fruit into the Yin and Yang, a pleasing mixture of dark and white chocolate shaped like the Chinese symbol.

The striking interior of this Vintage Park restaurant features high ceilings and unique centerpiece called the "acacia tree," a "trunk" in the center of the dining room that curves up to the top of the room and features panels that change colors. The wine list features several South African vintages, and items like flame-roasted chicken and unusual steaks (two filets served over deep-fried buns?) will set you back a bit, though they won't break the bank.

  • Post Oak Grill

    1111 Louisiana Downtown/ Midtown

    713-650-1700

Only open for lunch, Post Oak Grill is a no-nonsense business joint (private dining rooms are perfect for work parties). The service is as impeccable as the food, which is American with a Mexican flair. We recommend the crab cake with chipotle rémoulade, the steak salad with tequila-lime vinaigrette and the mahimahi with mango-habanero sauce.
  • Post Oak Grill

1415 S. Post Oak Lane Galleria

    713-993-9966

This is one of the classiest restaurants in Houston. Dim lighting and intimate booths make it a highly romantic spot, though at lunch it transforms into a no-nonsense business joint (two private dining rooms are perfect for work parties). Post Oak Grill attracts an older crowd, and regulars are greeted by name. The service is as impeccable as the food, which is American with a Mexican flair. We recommend the crab cake with chipotle rémoulade, the steak salad with tequila-lime vinaigrette and the mahimahi with mango-habanero sauce.

  • The Remington

    1919 Briar Oaks Lane Galleria

    713-403-2631

The St. Regis Houston hotel describes the atmosphere at The Remington as "casual elegance," which is on point. The food takes a Texan slant on American fusion cuisine. Though it's fairly casual cuisine for the price, much attention is paid to plating and appearance. The interior carries on the Texas theme with a red, white and blue (although mostly red) seating area.
  • Tony's

    3755 Richmond Ave. Greenway Plaza

    713-622-6778

For the quintessential dining experience with service to match, there's only one place to go, and that’s Tony's. The decor is elegant yet subdued, and the wine list is unparalleled, with many offerings sold by the glass. With chef Kate McLean at the helm (the first woman to lead the kitchen), every day brings a list of specials influenced by whatever is freshest and in season. The regular seasonal menu at this Greenway Plaza mainstay is a food lover's delight, with dishes such as salmon carpaccio and main courses such as truffle-crusted snapper and Veal T-bone Fiorentina. Try the profiteroles and the flourless chocolate cake.

  • Vargo's

2401 Fondren Outer Loop - SW

    713-782-3888

It's worth visiting Vargo's for the grounds alone, which encompass a beautiful gazebo and a large pond where ducks and geese swim while peacocks roam the sprawling three acres of land. This has long been a place for weddings and special parties. The menu is traditional, if not old-fashioned, with classics like lobster bisque, escargot, steaks, seafood and desserts like Bananas Foster, all of excellent quality. The Sunday brunch is an excellent way to get acquainted with the food.
