  • Aladdin Mediterranean Cuisine

    912 Westheimer Montrose

    713-942-2321

Exotic decor and an atmosphere reminiscent of Morocco set the scene at Aladdin. In the back of the restaurant, there's a tiny, cozy, private booth-lined room. The restaurant's excellent mezze, or sampler platter, features at least eight or ten different Middle Eastern items. The grilled-to-order kebabs, shawarma, tabbouleh and smoky baba ghanoush are exceptional. Aladdin's puffy pita bread is made on the premises in a brick oven; don't miss the oregano-sesame version known as zatar.

  • Alexander the Great

    713-622-2778

Serving dishes from traditional Greek fare such as domathes and spanakopita to more Texan offerings like ribeye steak and cabrito, Alexander also offers personalized menus for catering or take-out orders. Be sure to visit the "The Great Walls of Greeks," which is several walls adorned with black and white photos of Greeks. With belly dancing on Friday and Saturday nights starting at 9 p.m., their posted closing time of 11 p.m. is flexible, depending on how lively the restaurant gets.

2109 Highway 6, Sugar Land Outside Houston

    281-277-7787

Aristotle Grill offers a limited menu of Middle Eastern favorites in a relaxed atmosphere where everything is homemade, including the delicious baklava. Traditional appetizers include the usual hummus, baba ghanoush and dolmas, or stuffed grape leaves. Gyros are also available. Entrées include kebabs made from beef or chicken, all served with rice and grilled vegetables.
  • Arturo Boada Cuisine

    6510 Del Monte Dr. Galleria

    713-782-3011

In a sleepy side street in the Memorial Villages, Arturo Boada Cuisine is alive with the energy of a European bistro. Chef and owner Arturo Boada is a constant presence there, turning out his signature dishes like a creamy, tangy camarones henesy y hamaca - shrimp over plantains in a tangy sauce - and Italian pizzas with Spanish ingredients on top, like a carnitas pizza topped with asadero cheese and cilantro. The wine list is pricey but worth it; you'll want to split a bottle just to stay all night in the cozy space.

  • Black & White

    1001 Studewood Heights

    346-980-8484

Black & White is interesting and charming, but there is some finessing needed. Its initial concept was that of two different restaurants in the same building: Black with a Mediterranean menu and White with a menu geared for seafood. Ultimately, so many customers wanted to order from both that the restaurant gave in and starting handing two menus to everyone. There are a lot of crossovers (both menus feature Spanish, French and Italian food with a dash of Mexican), and it makes sense at this point to just unify them. Indeed, if the restaurant would ditch half its offerings, it would immediately improve. The bouillabaisse is consistently way too salty, and the spaghetti porcini arrabbiata, which should be at least a little spicy with red pepper flakes, was nothing but pallid sauce and slightly overcooked pasta. There are some dishes, though, that Black & White does a fantastic job with. These include the bone-in rib eye, salmon carpaccio and the amazing , or fried eggs over potatoes with slices of Spanish chorizo. The cocktails here are also balanced and well worth the indulgence. Because of these moments of brilliance and the great potential for improvement, Black & White is worth a visit. Ask to sit on the White side, a lighter, brighter, happier environment than the funereal, sparse motif of the Black dining room.

  • Cafe Luxor Hookah Bar & Grill

    3730 Washington Ave. Heights

    713-864-0000

This Egyptian-themed cafe, bar and hookah lounge features Egyptian murals painted by a local Heights artist throughout the building and patio, the highlight being the painting of King Tut and the pyramids behind the performance stage. Cafe Luxor serves up a variety of liquors, wines and beers, including six different varieties of beers from Houston's Karbach Brewing Company. The hookah has a local connection as well, as a large number of the 75-plus favored tobaccos offered come from the Haze Tobacco company in Stafford. An international food menu includes Mediterranean and Persian dishes as well as American bar food like pizzas, burgers and wings; the lemon-pepper wings are a customer favorite, according to the food and beverages manager we spoke with. Italian coffee imported from Italy is also available along with a variety of energy drinks, as well as Dom Pérignon champagne for that special occasion. Luxor calls itself the place “Where The Fun Never Stops,” and to prove it offers a weekly schedule of events that includes open-mike night, karaoke, live music and live belly dancers who mix things up by sometimes dancing with swords, fire and snakes. All ages are welcome at Luxor, which stays open until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, serving coffee, hookah and food after hours until closing.
  • Chatter's Cafe and Bistro

    140 S. Heights Blvd. Heights

    713-864-8080

This gem of a place, located in an old house, offers a varied cuisine with American, Greek, Italian and Middle Eastern dishes. Even though the restaurant is split into two parts, it remains very noisy when full, which it often is. The lunch menu features sandwiches, wraps, soups and salads. The dinner menu offers many chef's specials, such as the excellent beef burgundy, the chicken St. George with roasted poblano sauce and the linguine Genovese with olives, mushrooms and capers in a white wine sauce. They also offer a great weekend brunch menu.

  • Cleburne Cafeteria - CLOSED

    3606 Bissonnet Kirby-West U

    713-667-2386

Sure, the institution that once boasted a retro, school-cafeteria feel has given way to the neotraditional design trend of West University Place, but the food is still good. Cafeteria standards like roast beef, chicken-fried steak and tasty fried fish are complemented by Greek fare like moussaka. Memorable sides include the sweet, cracker-topped version of yellow-squash casserole and America's favorite comfort food, macaroni and cheese.

  • Conservatory

    1010 Prairie Downtown/ Midtown

    832-919-8382

Conservatory Beer Garden and Food Hall takes advantage of the recent uptick in the perception of downtown as a destination, while adding value of its own. Late hours and an array of options are a boon to downtown diners, drinkers and after-drink-diners alike. Grab a beer from the well-appointed and reasonably priced tap wall and grab a spot in line at your favorite vendor. If you’re in a group, divide and conquer. Samurai Noodle and Melange Creperie offer the best bet in terms of quality, and some of the pita sandwiches at Myth Kafe make for excellent drinking food. Each of the vendors has its own stumbling points as they expand or acclimate to the different service model necessitated by sharing space in a food hall with broad hours. For now, we recommend steering clear of El Burro and the Bull, where the barbecue just isn’t up to par.

  • Droubi's Bakery & Delicatessen

    2721 Hillcroft Galleria

    713-782-6160

The buffet line and the dining room are merely an afterthought at this sprawling bazaar of a Middle Eastern food store. You can find some of the same bottled, canned, dried and preserved foods elsewhere, but not at these prices. The olives that sell for $2.99 a pound here are twice as much at Central Market and three times as much at Whole Foods. The shawarma sandwich is the most popular lunch to go. But consider sitting down in the dining room if the braised lamb shanks are among the daily meat specials. The shanks are braised in a dark sauce with a stunning cinnamon aroma, and they can't be beat -- especially on a sampler plate with hummus, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh, a dolma, Lebanese salad and rice for $7.99.
  • Ekko Greek-American Deli

    5216 Richmond Ave. Galleria

    713-622-2625

This Greek deli is located in a Galleria gas station. There are a couple of small tables and a long counter with stools that overlooks the pumps, but most people get their food to go. While the moussaka is excellent, gyros dominate the menu. There is a gyro sandwich, a combo plate with gyro meat and chicken, and a Greek salad with gyro meat slices served over top. The gyro plate comes with enough meat and condiments to make a couple of sandwiches.

  • Empire Turkish Grill

12448 Memorial Dr. Outer Loop - NW

    713-827-7475

Despite the little old lady ambience, the enormous selection of exotic mezeler (appetizers), hearty salads and fascinating main dishes at Empire Turkish Grill makes this the most exciting Turkish restaurant in town. If you're bored with dry kebabs, head to Memorial and have a "yogurt grill" with the grilled meat served over bread cubes covered with yogurt. Or try the Turkish lamb chops, which are tender and moist despite being cooked well done. Lahana dolmasi, cabbage rolls stuffed with ground beef, rice and herbs with yogurt sauce, are popular, too.

  • Fadi's Mediterranean Grill

4738 Beechnut St. Outer Loop - SW

    713-666-4644

The food here may be served cafeteria-style, but it tastes gourmet. Diners line up along a sea of troughs stretching along two walls of the restaurant, each brimming with Middle Eastern delights. Pile your plate high with dolmas (grape leaves stuffed with rice, onions and tomatoes), tabouli and baba ghanoush, the dip made of roasted eggplant, tahini, lemon juice and olive oil. Then head to the meat counter and grab a kebab — beef, lamb or chicken — and a broiled lamb shank that's fall-off-the-bone tender and served in a gravy of carrots, red peppers and mushrooms.

There's still something for everyone in the family on the Greek-inspired menu at Hungry's Cafe, and kids are always welcome.

This is a gem of a place, right next to the Johnson Space Center. It's small, intimate and cozy, with an efficient waitstaff. Serving mainly Middle Eastern standbys such as hummus, baba ghanoush and tabbouleh, the place also features many Greek dishes like souvlaki, moussaka, spanakopita and pastitsio, all at bargain prices. The lamb-and-beef gyro, available as a sandwich or on a platter, is simply outstanding, as are the chicken kebabs. The wine list is fascinating, with choices from Turkey, Greece and Lebanon intermingled with more traditional offerings. Be sure to leave room for baklava and Turkish coffee flavored with cardamom.
  • Mediterraneo Market & Cafe

  • Mockingbird Bistro

    1985 Welch St. River Oaks

    713-533-0200

Mockingbird Bistro is a perfect place to indulge in either the fancy or the casual, like a big fat steak with french fries and an earthy Rhône red wine or a upscale hamburger and a cold beer. The American-Mediterranean menu doesn't try to wow with cleverness, but the quality ingredients elevates simple dishes to unexpected heights. The medieval decor doesn't exactly match the spirit of the restaurant, but it's a welcome breath of funkiness in a neighborhood of identical River Oaks townhomes. Don’t miss the restaurant’s outstanding happy hour. It’s a favorite of locals thanks to its reasonably-priced fizzy drinks and wines alongside small bites ranging from housemade pork sausage to mac and cheese. Make sure to at least occasionally sit at the bar for the happy hour burger, a Kobe beef beauty packed with Stilton blue and bacon jam.
