  • Bamboo House

    540 Waugh Dr. River Oaks

    713-522-3442

Bamboo House's serene and spotless interior, with its soothing colors and hip décor, belies its strip-center location. Standard Chinese dishes are served alongside more adventuresome offerings; Vietnamese, Thai and Japanese dishes also make appearances. Prices are slightly higher here than at other Chinese restaurants, but they reflect careful preparation and choice ingredients. Wok-seared beef and leeks, teriyaki rib-eye, oolong sea bass and walnut shrimp are favorites.
  • Cafe 121 Chinese Restaurant

    5727 Westheimer Galleria

    713-784-8999

This place specializes in pan-Asian cuisine, including Chinese and Vietnamese. They also focus on healthier versions of Asian favorites, using no MSG and only skinless white chicken meat. An extensive menu includes some dishes that are hard to find or not available elsewhere, like soup dumplings and mango shrimp.
  • Dragon Bowl Asian Bistro

    1221 W. 11th St. Heights

    713-426-2750

Dragon Bowl epitomizes the concept of a useful restaurant: a cozy, accessible neighborhood spot that serves food to please nearly every palate. But it manages to escape comparisons to a Pei Wei by actually offering very good food made with high-quality ingredients by a legitimate chef who puts modern Texas touches on the pan-Asian menu. Look for the Third Coast and roll with crispy fried oysters or the head-on Gulf shrimp in a spicy green curry. Dragon Bowl also does a brisk takeout business with standbys like its Hippie Fried Rice, but it's hard not to want to linger in the airy dining room or at the long bar while you watch the cooks work the woks.

  • Foreign Correspondents

    4721 N. Main Downtown/ Midtown

    713-864-8424

Foreign Correspondents is the northern Thai-focused outpost of the growing Treadsack restaurant group empire. Though former fishmonger-to-the-stars PJ Stoops has his name on the place, the food is truly a collaborative effort between Stoops and his wife, Apple, whom he met and married while on a three-year stint cooking in northern Thailand. Their teamwork results in dishes that sparkle with bright, evocative flavors and thrilling textures. Chilies, lime, fish sauce, garlic, ginger, galangal and a gaggle of herbs. There are also beguilingly simple offerings, like a pair of chicken dishes, one grilled and one fried, focusing on the simple pleasures of a well-prepared bird. A handful of set menu options — aimed at parties of two, four and six but plentiful enough to feed a few more each — helps diners run through the menu in Thai fashion, spreading the meal across a tumble of shared plates. It’s one unexpected hit after another, with leftovers a likely (happy) ending to the meal. Foreign Correspondents offers a smart, Thai-food-friendly wine list from beverage director Travis Hinkle and compelling cocktails from bar director Leslie Ross. Order more food than you need and share it with a bunch of friends.

  • Ginger Thai

    303 Grasshopper Lane Memorial

    281-531-7739

Memorial's Ginger Thai serves both Thai food and sushi, and the Pad Thai isn't overly sweet or dumbed down for American palates. The som tam is a vivid tangle of shredded green papaya, carrots and green beans in a citrusy-peanut sauce with just a hint of salty, sea-tinted brine that makes it one of the most alluring dishes in Houston on a hot day.

The menu is full of creatively named dishes like Infernal Chicken Curry, Not Gay Noodles and Art Car Curry.

  • Kanomwan Thai

736 1/2 Telephone Rd. East End

    713-923-4230

Kanomwan was one of the first restaurants to introduce Thai food to Houston, and it's still serving the same terrifically spicy curries from its East End home decades later. Although the infamous owner — so-called "Thai Nazi" Darawan Charoenrat — passed away in 2010, the Charoenrat family still honors his legacy by making some of the best green curry and tom ka gai in town. Other customer favorites include the deep-fried pork toasts, the tom yum goong and the pad panang. Although the kitchen will adjust the spice level for you, beware: If you ask them to go extra-spicy, you may not be prepared for the fireworks that follow. And remember to BYOB if you come, because nothing cures the burn of spicy Thai food like a cold, hoppy beer.

    713-664-6698

Bellaire's hippest restaurant sports a minimalist design and an Asian fusion menu with some impressive presentation. Here you can find some interesting items, such as the agedashi tofu and provolone wrap with dashi dipping sauce and a side of sweet potato fries, or a signature pizza topped with chicken, Tom Yum seasoning, herbs and mushrooms on a crispy thin crust. The dinner menu is a sophisticated assortment of Asian-inspired dishes, including the crusted sesame chicken milanaise with lemon beurre blanc sauce or the roasted five spice duck sautéed with baby bok choy, and wonton noodles, drizzled with a lovely star anise glaze.

  • Merlion Restaurant

1301 Fourth St., Seabrook Clear Lake

    281-385-9975

Merlion is a solid Thai restaurant with exceptional seafood dishes, thanks to its proximity to the Seabrook shrimp fleet. The chef has the good sense not to overcook the shrimp and to buy it fresh every day. And when you combine perfectly cooked seafood with even average Thai sauces, you get something very special.
  • Morningside Thai Restaurant

    2473 S. Braeswood Blvd. Kirby-West U

    713-661-4400

Not only is the fresh Thai food something to come back for time and time again, but so are the friendly staff and the owners, Ying and Jim Roberts, who treat diners as if they've come into their home for a meal. All the curries (especially the red curry with duck) are excellent, and traditional Pad Thai is true to its classic roots. There's nothing fussy or overly manipulated at this tiny Thai restaurant in Braeswood Place. The focus is all about fresh, authentic food with a heaping side of Thai hospitality. It may not look like much from the outside, but Ying knows what she's doing in the kitchen, and her dynamic, spicy, fabulous food will prove it to you.

Nidda Thai Cuisine is one of Houston's oldest Thai restaurants, and the little restaurant on Lower Westheimer has been serving excellent Thai cuisine - always made from scratch, even the curries - since the early '80s, when it was called Renu's and later Bangkok Palace. Regardless of name, the restaurant has always been a Montrose institution, welcoming people from all walks of life who are just interested in a cold Singha beer, a friendly smile and a plate of chu chee eggplant in rich red curry sauce or a peppy Pad Thai covered in peanuts.

Lunch specials abound and are excellent value, but you may want to skip these and try the soups, like the tom yum gai (chicken with lemongrass), the poh tagk (spicy seafood) or the green papaya salad. Other dishes sure to please include the pork with string beans and the red duck curry.

    6719 Weslayan Kirby-West U

  • Songkran Thai Kitchen

    1101-08 Uptown Park Blvd. Galleria

    713-993-9096

Songkran is the latest from chef Junnajet "Jett" Hurapan, who's returning to his Thai roots after years of cooking other Asian cuisines. This is his labor of love, and it's clear from the attention to detail in both the food and the decor that this is the restaurant Hurapan's been waiting to helm. Tucked into a chic spot that formerly housed 1252 Tapas Bar in Uptown Park, Songkran's version of Thai food is upscale and clearly caters to the Uptown Park/Galleria crowd. It's safe, but still flavorful and authentic, if a little easy on the spice for those accustomed to the food at Vieng Thai or Thai Gourmet. With a great wine list and a lovely outdoor patio, Songkran is poised to be an Uptown Park mainstay, with excellent dishes like heavenly beef, whole red snapper and pad thai.

    713-365-9922

Straits serves modern Singaporean cuisine with Thai and Vietnamese influences with a lounge-like atmosphere in CityCentre near Memorial. Hip decor, a large outdoor dining area and swift, friendly servers make it an upscale hangout by night and a relaxing lunch spot by day. The San Francisco-based restaurant has adapted well to Houston thanks to Chef John Sikhattana, who runs a tight ship and keeps the food hot, fresh and spicy—just as Singaporean dishes should be. Standouts include the whole fried striped bass, a creamy-sour laksa noodle soup, fragrant Hainan chicken and the flaky, addictive roti prata.

  • Thai Bistro Restaurant

    3241 SW Freeway Greenway Plaza

    713-669-9375

Thai Bistro is a rare bird, a mainstream-oriented Thai restaurant that doesn't cut any corners. The peppers aren't jalapeños, they're Thai peppers. The tart and sweet flavors come from expensive tamarind, not cheap limes and cane sugar. The curries at this Greenway spot are lovingly homemade from scratch, not whipped up from spice mixes. It's quality Thai food that both veteran Thai food lovers and novices can enjoy.

  • Thai Cafe

    10928 Westheimer Memorial

    713-780-3096

New Indian owners kept the old chef, who prepares some of the best Thai food in the city, then added a whole menu of Indian items, including the obligatory lunch buffet. The decor could do with an update but not the food, which remains as solid as ever. An extensive Thai menu has all of the traditional favorites like pad Thai, laad nar, and red and green curries (including an unusual but very tasty duck curry). The Indian menu also has lots of curries, including an excellent fish curry and a super-spicy lamb vindaloo.
