  • Afrikiko

9625 Bissonnet Outer Loop - SW

    713-773-1400

Afrikiko is about as close to a bona fide African experience (an experience, by the way, that usually includes soccer on the eatery's satellite TV) as you're going to get here in the States. Owned by a Ghanaian family, the eatery that's inconspicuously tucked behind a Burger King makes authentic fufu (the thick-paste, doughy-like staple of that particular region of the planet) with goat meat, palm nut soup and jollof rice. If you don't see your favorite dish on the menu, such as red-red stew, the restaurateurs will gladly make it for you. Additionally, if you're an obruni (the Twi language term for "white person"), the cooks are conscious enough to tame down the hot factor. So if you like it spicy, tell them and you'll be sweating like mad, much like you would be on a hot day under the African sun.

  • Finger Licking Bukateria

9811 Bissonnet St. Outer Loop - SW

    713-270-7070

This flagship West African restaurant in southwest Houston specializes in cuisine found in countries like Nigeria and Ghana. The waitstaff and customers also predominantly hail from that part of the world, but there's no language barrier thanks to the helpful staff. Good starter items are the finely spiced pepper soup or the savory jollof rice. Of course, you can go all out and order some egusi and fufu to discover the true meaning of "finger-licking good."

  • Leibman's Wine & Fine Foods

    14529 Memorial Memorial

    281-493-3663

This food lover's dream has well-stocked cheese and deli-meats counters. Deli sandwiches, panini and salads make up most of the eat-on-premise business, but it's the take-home gourmet and prepared foods that will keep you coming back. All come with reheating instructions. The wine selection is legendary, especially the South African selections.
  • Olivette

111 N. Post Oak Lane Outer Loop - NW

    713-685-6713

Beautiful views of the wooded grounds of The Houstonian Hotel give this place a wonderful atmosphere. The restaurant's interior has an upscale French-provincial feel about it, with the menu blending cuisines of the Mediterranean, North Africa, America and the Middle East. There's a complimentary hummus-and-olives plate, and the kitchen is as comfortable with a simple roasted tomato soup as with crab cakes, the more complex seared tuna loin or the herb-crusted rack of lamb, all of which allow the chef to shine.
  • Peli Peli Galleria

    5085 Westheimer, Suite B2515 Galleria

    281--257--9500

The dining room of Peli Peli’s second location in The Galleria mall sports a big framework full of LEDs overhead, as well as black, brushstroke graphics on the walls that represent the 12 tribes of Israel. It’s quite the visual spectacle. At dinnertime, entrées at this South African restaurant are rather expensive, ranging from $34 to $48 (it has to pay for all that glamorous interior design and the Galleria address somehow). Diners might want their introductory visit to be at lunchtime, when they can take advantage of cheaper prices and try a few extra items. Meat lovers will die for the espetada, a dangling skewer of chunks of seared beef that drip garlicky juices on the side dishes below in the most wonderful way. Ditto for the biltong, South Africa’s answer to beef jerky with wafer- thin cuts of sirloin drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with crushed coriander seeds. Vegetarians aren’t forgotten, though, and the choices include Curry Spaghetti Squash and a vegetable plate of mango coleslaw, roasted red potatoes, sautéed baby spinach, French-style green beans, Brussels sprouts and couscous.

  • Suya Hut

11720 W. Airport, Stafford Outside Houston

    281-265-1411

Suya Hut specializes in suya, as the name would imply, a northern Nigerian form of the classic kebab. But here, prepare for your mouth to be set afire with the sweetly spicy ginger-habanero marinade on the meat and order it with a side of jollof rice and plantains to keep your tongue from blistering. Egusi soup with cassave tuwo is another favorite, and a fun finger food to eat with friends. Wash it all down with a skunky beer, relax over your meal and you'll be eating like a true West African in no time.
