The Greek food is better than it has to be for a bar, but don't go at night if you're in a rush. By the time the sun goes down, Byzantio has been trans-formed into a hip, casual bar where the spanakopita and souvlaki are more a bonus to the beer and atmosphere.

You can find some of the same bottled, canned, dried and preserved foods elsewhere, but not at these prices. The olives that sell for $2.99 a pound here are twice as much at Central Market and three times as much at Whole Foods. The shawarma sandwich is the most popular lunch to go. But consider sitting down in the dining room if the braised lamb shanks are among the daily meat specials. The shanks are braised in a dark sauce with a stunning cinnamon aroma, and they can't be beat -- especially on a sampler plate with hummus, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh, a dolma, Lebanese salad and rice for $7.99.

This Greek deli is located in a Galleria gas station. There are a couple of small tables and a long counter with stools that overlooks the pumps, but most people get their food to go. While the moussaka is excellent, gyros dominate the menu. There is a gyro sandwich, a combo plate with gyro meat and chicken, and a Greek salad with gyro meat slices served over top. The gyro plate comes with enough meat and condiments to make a couple of sandwiches.

“Kali Orexi” proclaims the menu at Helen Greek Food & Wine in big, bold letters. It means “Enjoy your meal,” and it’s very likely that diners will here. Helen is serving very traditional Greek food, and by that we do not mean gyro meat shaved from a giant, homogeneous cone. Here, gyro meat is slices of marinated pork shoulder, and the Greek village salad has no lettuce — because a Greek salad isn’t supposed to include it. (It’s served only when fresh heirloom tomatoes are in season.) Despite the reverence for tradition, when appropriate, Helen also employs modern sensibilities to improve in areas where tradition is found lacking. Take, for example, the dessert selection, which eschews the normal honeyphyllonuts combinations in favor of creative options like the Texas pecan baklava sundae and the feta mousse with olive oil and thyme shortbread. Don’t be afraid to dive into the extensive Greek wine list. Proprietor Evan Turner is a sommelier who has taken care to train his staff on wine. They’ll be able to guide you to a pleasing selection.

This is a gem of a place, right next to the Johnson Space Center. It's small, intimate and cozy, with an efficient waitstaff. Serving mainly Middle Eastern standbys such as hummus, baba ghanoush and tabbouleh, the place also features many Greek dishes like souvlaki, moussaka, spanakopita and pastitsio, all at bargain prices. The lamb-and-beef gyro, available as a sandwich or on a platter, is simply outstanding, as are the chicken kebabs. The wine list is fascinating, with choices from Turkey, Greece and Lebanon intermingled with more traditional offerings. Be sure to leave room for baklava and Turkish coffee flavored with cardamom.

The American-Mediterranean menu doesn't try to wow with cleverness, but the quality ingredients elevates simple dishes to unexpected heights. The medieval decor doesn't exactly match the spirit of the restaurant, but it's a welcome breath of funkiness in a neighborhood of identical River Oaks townhomes. Don’t miss the restaurant’s outstanding happy hour. It’s a favorite of locals thanks to its reasonably-priced fizzy drinks and wines alongside small bites ranging from housemade pork sausage to mac and cheese. Make sure to at least occasionally sit at the bar for the happy hour burger, a Kobe beef beauty packed with Stilton blue and bacon jam.

Myth Kafe is a warm, inviting, hidden treasure in the southeastern corner of Downtown Houston where I45 and US59 meet. Not easy to find, the restaurant is nonetheless a favorite of many working men and women who pour in during the lunch hours and gobble down gyros and lemon chicken with the housemade “mystic potatoes” which are seasoned with lemon, mustard and rosemary. During the evening the pace slows down and residents of the East End and Midtown come to enjoy long, leisurely dinners with a carafe of the complimentary house wine. (The cafe does not have a beer and wine license but does offer wine, as it’s part of the Mediterranean tradition to offer wine to your guests. Patrons are also welcome to bring their own wine or beer without a cork fee.) The pace of the restaurant is slow, thus their slogan “Siga Siga,” or “Slowly slowly,” meaning all good things take time. Patience here is rewarded in the form of perfectly moist meat, vegetables that aren’t abused or hidden in sauces or cream, and genuine Greek desserts that are made from scratch, in-house. Myth Kafe is owned by Georgios Petrou, his wife, and the cook, Charalambos, or “Harry” for short. The team is a small one, but all three worked in tourism in Athens, Greece, and are very sensitive to the needs of their patrons, including when to leave them in peace to eat and converse without interruption, as is customary in Europe. Regulars know to flag down George when they’re in need of something, and George- knowing the regulars by heart- usually doesn’t even have to ask what. Ordering at the counter makes for faster service, despite long lines at this Montrose-area Houston institution. It's hard not to like everything on the extensive and authentic Greek menu. The gyros and lamb shank are legendary. Food is served on Styrofoam plates with plastic utensils that spoil the atmosphere a little but don't affect the food. Niko Niko's also has great desserts and baked goods.

This Meyerland restaurant is not your typical barbecue joint, although a "joint" is what it is. Old Hickory Inn's menu includes decent chicken-fried steak and fried catfish, along with great-tasting gyros and rice pudding (both a testament to the owner's Greek heritage). As for the ´cue, the brisket and sausage are good, but the ribs are dry. The chicken is moist and has an excellent smoke flavor. Baked potatoes come with a choice of chopped beef, beef slices or chicken topping. The sauce here is dark, sweet and tangy.

The restaurant is run by the children of George Zabak, who made the falafel famous in Houston at a now-shuttered restaurant called Mama's Po'Boys.
