  • Aladdin Mediterranean Cuisine

    912 Westheimer Montrose

    713-942-2321

Exotic decor and an atmosphere reminiscent of Morocco set the scene at Aladdin. In the back of the restaurant, there's a tiny, cozy, private booth-lined room. The restaurant's excellent mezze, or sampler platter, features at least eight or ten different Middle Eastern items. The grilled-to-order kebabs, shawarma, tabbouleh and smoky baba ghanoush are exceptional. Aladdin's puffy pita bread is made on the premises in a brick oven; don't miss the oregano-sesame version known as zatar.

  • Aristotle Grill

2109 Highway 6, Sugar Land Outside Houston

    281-277-7787

Aristotle Grill offers a limited menu of Middle Eastern favorites in a relaxed atmosphere where everything is homemade, including the delicious baklava. Traditional appetizers include the usual hummus, baba ghanoush and dolmas, or stuffed grape leaves. Gyros are also available. Entrées include kebabs made from beef or chicken, all served with rice and grilled vegetables.
  • Byzantio Cafe & Bar - CLOSED

    403 W. Gray River Oaks

    713-520-6896

Cafe by day, bar by night, Byzantio is a comfortable neighborhood hangout that feels a bit like coming home. And, in a sense, you are; it's tucked into an old house along West Gray that's easily accessible for downtowners at lunch or Montrose residents at dinner. The Greek food is better than it has to be for a bar, but don't go at night if you're in a rush. By the time the sun goes down, Byzantio has been trans-formed into a hip, casual bar where the spanakopita and souvlaki are more a bonus to the beer and atmosphere.

  • Cleburne Cafeteria - CLOSED

    3606 Bissonnet Kirby-West U

    713-667-2386

Sure, the institution that once boasted a retro, school-cafeteria feel has given way to the neotraditional design trend of West University Place, but the food is still good. Cafeteria standards like roast beef, chicken-fried steak and tasty fried fish are complemented by Greek fare like moussaka. Memorable sides include the sweet, cracker-topped version of yellow-squash casserole and America's favorite comfort food, macaroni and cheese.

  • Droubi's Bakery & Delicatessen

    2721 Hillcroft Galleria

    713-782-6160

The buffet line and the dining room are merely an afterthought at this sprawling bazaar of a Middle Eastern food store. You can find some of the same bottled, canned, dried and preserved foods elsewhere, but not at these prices. The olives that sell for $2.99 a pound here are twice as much at Central Market and three times as much at Whole Foods. The shawarma sandwich is the most popular lunch to go. But consider sitting down in the dining room if the braised lamb shanks are among the daily meat specials. The shanks are braised in a dark sauce with a stunning cinnamon aroma, and they can't be beat -- especially on a sampler plate with hummus, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh, a dolma, Lebanese salad and rice for $7.99.
  • Ekko Greek-American Deli

    5216 Richmond Ave. Galleria

    713-622-2625

This Greek deli is located in a Galleria gas station. There are a couple of small tables and a long counter with stools that overlooks the pumps, but most people get their food to go. While the moussaka is excellent, gyros dominate the menu. There is a gyro sandwich, a combo plate with gyro meat and chicken, and a Greek salad with gyro meat slices served over top. The gyro plate comes with enough meat and condiments to make a couple of sandwiches.

Since 1948, Harry's has served reliable and tasty steam-table lunches to the Midtown and Montrose neighborhoods, but is more well known now for breakfast. Take a seat in the sunny, bustling dining room in the morning - get there early to avoid the wait - and enjoy American classics like biscuits and gravy alongside Greek and South American dishes. Fresh-squeezed orange juice, blueberry waffles and enormous Greek omelets are can't-miss breakfast items. At lunch, grab a tray and make your way through the line to enjoy Southern staples like chicken fried steak or Greek treats like pastitsio.

  • Helen Greek Food and Wine

    2429 Rice Blvd Kirby-West U

    832-831-7133

“Kali Orexi” proclaims the menu at Helen Greek Food & Wine in big, bold letters. It means “Enjoy your meal,” and it’s very likely that diners will here. Helen is serving very traditional Greek food, and by that we do not mean gyro meat shaved from a giant, homogeneous cone. Here, gyro meat is slices of marinated pork shoulder, and the Greek village salad has no lettuce — because a Greek salad isn’t supposed to include it. (It’s served only when fresh heirloom tomatoes are in season.) Despite the reverence for tradition, when appropriate, Helen also employs modern sensibilities to improve in areas where tradition is found lacking. Take, for example, the dessert selection, which eschews the normal honeyphyllonuts combinations in favor of creative options like the Texas pecan baklava sundae and the feta mousse with olive oil and thyme shortbread. Don’t be afraid to dive into the extensive Greek wine list. Proprietor Evan Turner is a sommelier who has taken care to train his staff on wine. They’ll be able to guide you to a pleasing selection.

    281-493-1520

The Memorial incarnation of Houston favorite Hungry's features an enormous space with an equally large patio that overlooks a quiet, residential portion of Memorial Drive. It also overlooks its next door bar, appropriately called NEXTDOOR Bar & Lounge, that's located in an old converted auto body garage. Unlike Hungry's, NEXTDOOR offers brunch and a full bar with specialty cocktails for the hip crowd. There's still something for everyone in the family on the Greek-inspired menu at Hungry's Cafe, and kids are always welcome.

  • Kojak's Deli & Fine Foods

    1912 W. 18th St. Heights

    713-426-1800

The wide variety of homemade lunch and dinner specials are a draw at this Mediterranean-themed, order-at-the-counter neighborhood spot. Breakfasts range from steel-cut oats to French toast, migas to traditional eggs and bacon. Lunchtime brings a terrific Cuban sandwich, Middle Eastern specialties like hummus and falafel, chicken enchiladas, a gyro plate and quiche. Dinner might include lemon-pepper chicken, seared salmon or meatloaf.
  • Mediterranean Chef

    1305 NASA Parkway Clear Lake

    281-486-8854

This is a gem of a place, right next to the Johnson Space Center. It's small, intimate and cozy, with an efficient waitstaff. Serving mainly Middle Eastern standbys such as hummus, baba ghanoush and tabbouleh, the place also features many Greek dishes like souvlaki, moussaka, spanakopita and pastitsio, all at bargain prices. The lamb-and-beef gyro, available as a sandwich or on a platter, is simply outstanding, as are the chicken kebabs. The wine list is fascinating, with choices from Turkey, Greece and Lebanon intermingled with more traditional offerings. Be sure to leave room for baklava and Turkish coffee flavored with cardamom.
  • Mediterraneo Market & Cafe

18033 Upper Bay Rd. Clear Lake

    281-333-3180

A quaint spot with a beautiful outdoor patio, this place never fails to do an excellent job. While traditional Middle Eastern dishes like hummus, baba ganoush, tabouleh, gyros, falafel and kebabs abound, you'll also find a mean moussaka, an outstanding osso buco and chicken marsala. The wine and beer selection features items from Croatia, Turkey, Russia and Bulgaria, to mention a few. There's also a specialty market.
  • Mockingbird Bistro

    1985 Welch St. River Oaks

    713-533-0200

Mockingbird Bistro is a perfect place to indulge in either the fancy or the casual, like a big fat steak with french fries and an earthy Rhône red wine or a upscale hamburger and a cold beer. The American-Mediterranean menu doesn't try to wow with cleverness, but the quality ingredients elevates simple dishes to unexpected heights. The medieval decor doesn't exactly match the spirit of the restaurant, but it's a welcome breath of funkiness in a neighborhood of identical River Oaks townhomes. Don’t miss the restaurant’s outstanding happy hour. It’s a favorite of locals thanks to its reasonably-priced fizzy drinks and wines alongside small bites ranging from housemade pork sausage to mac and cheese. Make sure to at least occasionally sit at the bar for the happy hour burger, a Kobe beef beauty packed with Stilton blue and bacon jam.

  • Myth Kafe

    1730 Jefferson St Downtown/ Midtown

    713-739-0990

Myth Kafe is a warm, inviting, hidden treasure in the southeastern corner of Downtown Houston where I45 and US59 meet. Not easy to find, the restaurant is nonetheless a favorite of many working men and women who pour in during the lunch hours and gobble down gyros and lemon chicken with the housemade “mystic potatoes” which are seasoned with lemon, mustard and rosemary. During the evening the pace slows down and residents of the East End and Midtown come to enjoy long, leisurely dinners with a carafe of the complimentary house wine. (The cafe does not have a beer and wine license but does offer wine, as it’s part of the Mediterranean tradition to offer wine to your guests. Patrons are also welcome to bring their own wine or beer without a cork fee.) The pace of the restaurant is slow, thus their slogan “Siga Siga,” or “Slowly slowly,” meaning all good things take time. Patience here is rewarded in the form of perfectly moist meat, vegetables that aren’t abused or hidden in sauces or cream, and genuine Greek desserts that are made from scratch, in-house. Myth Kafe is owned by Georgios Petrou, his wife, and the cook, Charalambos, or “Harry” for short. The team is a small one, but all three worked in tourism in Athens, Greece, and are very sensitive to the needs of their patrons, including when to leave them in peace to eat and converse without interruption, as is customary in Europe. Regulars know to flag down George when they’re in need of something, and George- knowing the regulars by heart- usually doesn’t even have to ask what. The restaurant also offers catering, take-out, and delivery via grubhub, eat24, zifty, eatstreet, favor, chownow, and goodybag. They are also available to rent out for private events and occasionally have special events of their own, listed on the event page of their website: www.mythkafe.com

  • Niko Niko's

    2520 Montrose Blvd. Montrose

    713-528-0966

Ordering at the counter makes for faster service, despite long lines at this Montrose-area Houston institution. It's hard not to like everything on the extensive and authentic Greek menu. The gyros and lamb shank are legendary. Food is served on Styrofoam plates with plastic utensils that spoil the atmosphere a little but don't affect the food. Niko Niko's also has great desserts and baked goods.

  • Niko Niko's Market Square

    301 Milam St. Downtown/ Midtown

    713-224-4976

The first-ever offshoot of Montrose favorite Niko Niko's sits right in the middle of the revamped Market Square Park downtown, making it popular with office workers during the day and downtown residents at dinner. Box lunches for less than $10 provide a tremendous amount of tasty food in easy-to-tote containers, and the $4 breakfast pitas - our favorite is the falafel version - can't be beat for delicious, filling breakfasts to go.

  • Old Hickory Inn

5427 S. Braeswood Blvd. Outer Loop - SW

    713-723-8908

This Meyerland restaurant is not your typical barbecue joint, although a "joint" is what it is. Old Hickory Inn's menu includes decent chicken-fried steak and fried catfish, along with great-tasting gyros and rice pudding (both a testament to the owner's Greek heritage). As for the ´cue, the brisket and sausage are good, but the ribs are dry. The chicken is moist and has an excellent smoke flavor. Baked potatoes come with a choice of chopped beef, beef slices or chicken topping. The sauce here is dark, sweet and tangy.
  • Olivette

111 N. Post Oak Lane Outer Loop - NW

    713-685-6713

Beautiful views of the wooded grounds of The Houstonian Hotel give this place a wonderful atmosphere. The restaurant's interior has an upscale French-provincial feel about it, with the menu blending cuisines of the Mediterranean, North Africa, America and the Middle East. There's a complimentary hummus-and-olives plate, and the kitchen is as comfortable with a simple roasted tomato soup as with crab cakes, the more complex seared tuna loin or the herb-crusted rack of lamb, all of which allow the chef to shine.

This cozy, family-run Lebanese restaurant with Mom in the kitchen serves traditional Middle Eastern fare such as tabbouleh, hummus, baba ghanoush and falafel, which are all homemade from scratch. Petit also serves some of the best kebabs in the city, along with unusual dishes like rqaqat (phyllo dough stuffed with three cheeses) and makanek (Lebanese spiced sausages). The garlic sauce served with many of the dishes will have you begging for more.
  • Skewers Cafe & Grill

    3991 Richmond Greenway Plaza

    713-599-1444

An excellent choice for either lunch or dinner, Skewers smartly caters to both crowds independently. At lunch, you'll get a quick and filling Mediterranean meal with quality food - baked chicken or gyros are both great choices - for a low price. At night, with full service and live entertainment (on the weekends), it's a lovely spot for a post-work drink (you must try the Lebanese wine) or a dinner date over silky hummus and fragrant kafta kebabs. As a bonus, the Edwards Greenway Plaza movie theater is right around the corner.

While working through plates of light and flaky spanakopita, dense moussaka and classic Greek salad, Theo's in-your-face staff will make you feel cozy enough to sink into the comfy booths and even stick around once you've finished eating (next to the Montrose HPD substation, no less). The sampler will easily feed a family of four while giving a good idea of what Greece has to offer, and the classic gyros, crisp calamari and delectable pizzas are popular choices day and night.

  • Zabak's Mediterranean Cafe

    5901 Westheimer Galleria

    713-977-7676

Zabak's Mediterranean Café is a spotless little walk-up service restaurant with marble floors and fewer than 20 tables. If you have visitors who are craving falafel sandwiches, this is the place to take them. Zabak's falafels are the best in the city. Crunchy on the outside and bright green and spicy hot on the inside, these chickpea patties make awesome sandwiches. The restaurant is run by the children of George Zabak, who made the falafel famous in Houston at a now-shuttered restaurant called Mama's Po'Boys.

  • Zoe's Kitchen

    3701 S. Shepherd Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-522-7447

This is a franchise based in Birmingham, Alabama, that specializes in fast, healthy and fresh food with a Greek accent. The inside is colorful, bright and comfortable, and the food is delivered quickly. There are meals that are light, high in protein and heart-friendly. The grilled chicken sandwich and the grilled feta sandwich with tomato, basil and caramelized onions are both worth trying, as is the chicken marinara. Zoe's also offers family dinners to go, such as baked chicken or chicken kebabs.
  • Zoe's Kitchen

12850 Memorial Outer Loop - NW

    713-984-8804

The fourth location of national fast-casual chain Zoe's is an easy fit for Town & Country Village, with a broad patio that's great for people-watching on the busy weekends and a menu that suits every member of the family. Steak roll-ups with caramelized onions will please the carnivores, while an unusually peppery pimiento cheese sandwich (ask for it grilled) or a hummus and salad plate will please the veggie lovers. And Zoe's still earns its keep with some of the most unique coleslaw and potato salad around.
