  • Alpha Bakery & Deli

11209 Bellaire Blvd. Outer Loop - SW

    281-988-5222

At Alpha Bakery you get a sandwich on a crunchy Vietnamese French bread roll that's baked on the premises, spread with butter and pâté and stuffed with roasted pork, shredded carrots, cukes, cilantro and jalapeño for half of the price of the sandwich chain product. You can't get a sweetened coconut rice dessert at Subway, either.

  • Baba Yega

    2607 Grant Montrose

    713-522-0042

This cozy cafe, named after a Slavic witch, has been a favorite ever since Montrose was the capital of Bohemian culture. The converted bungalow, with patio seating and a lush herb garden, serves artist types, workers and families. Like its clientele, the food is a mixed bag of deli, home cooking and vegetarian cuisine. Winners include the Caesar, topped with grilled chicken and charred red peppers, and the grilled vegetables over herbed brown rice. The best bet, however, is the huge char-grilled burger, served with a side of Baba Yega's famous dill potato salad.

This Lindale Park deli is much more than just a sandwich spot: Bocca Deli also offers coffee, ice cream and even free Wi-Fi inside its clean, inviting shop. Owner Mike Kriticos and his family live just down the street, and the personal investment in the cafe shows in the friendly service and warm atmosphere. Sandwiches and soups are on offer all day long, but you don't want to miss the Angus burger that's served every day after 5 p.m.

  • Brown Bag Deli

    702 Main Downtown/ Midtown

    713-224-7000

Nothing could be simpler or faster than ordering the sandwiches here. Pick up a brown bag from the counter, mark your choices of home-made bread (go for the Jalapeno cheddar), meat (white meat chicken salad or maple glazed honey ham are favorites), cheese (go for the horseradish white cheddar), toppings (lettuce and tomatoes for example) and spreads (try the honey mustard), directly on the bag, hand it in and wait maybe two minutes at most to be called. For those who prefer crispy bread, try having it toasted. Do not miss their chocolate chip cookies, which are more chocolate chips than cookie dough.

  • Carter & Cooley Company

    375 W. 19th St. Heights

    713-864-3354

This place is housed in an old Simon Lewis building once occupied by Ward's Drugs. Ironically, considering that C&C once aspired to be a Jewish deli, the best sandwich here is the BLT, with the requisite white toast, leaf lettuce, ripe tomatoes, mayo and eight (yes, eight!) slices of perfectly cooked bacon. C&C also makes a mean Reuben, and the muffuletta is piled high with meat and cheese but mostly serves as a vehicle for its olive salad. And a good one at that.

  • Chicago Italian Beef

    1777 Airline Dr. Heights

    713-862-2828

Cubs fans (and, of course, anyone else) can unite around a Chicago favorite: Italian beef subs. The Italian beef sub is served "dipped" in gravy and comes with sweet peppers and homemade rough-cut fries. Giardiniera (hot, pickled vegetables) and other toppings are available on the condiments bar. The place also serves a mean meatball sandwich with marinara sauce and a great Italian sausage sandwich. Chicago-style hot dogs and a Polish dog with grilled onions are also not to be missed.
  • Dessert Gallery Bakery & Café

    3600 Kirby Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-522-9999

The Dessert Gallery specializes in desserts, but also serves sandwiches, wraps and salads just in case you've had one cupcake too many. You can also pick up a box lunch or a sandwich party tray, or customize your own cookie or cake. Their website has a section where they post their recipes for you to fix, then report back with your success. The Dessert Gallery has a dine-in section, for those who'd rather eat their desserts inside.

  • Earl of Sandwich

1930 Highway 6 S., Sugar Land Outside Houston

    281-240-2408

Roger Clemens's franchise (the original's in Disney Land), is a "walk up, order and watch your hot sandwich being made" kinda place. The place does lots of business, so the interior is large and accommodating, especially the back, which is designed to look and feel like a library. The sandwiches have cute names like cannonballs (meatballs, marinara and mozzarella) and Le Frenchy (ham, brie and dijonnaise sauce), although at breakfast time the names are plain and simple. Cobb, Chinese chicken, Caesar and tuna are among the decent, yet unremarkable, salad offerings.
  • Edloe St. Cafe - CLOSED

    6119 Edloe Kirby-West U

    713-666-4302

In this cramped but cozy Greenway spot, locals line up for American dishes like egg salad, tuna and pimiento cheese sandwiches sided with homemade potato salad chock-full of red peppers and parsley. Don't miss Edloe St. Cafe's famous chicken enchiladas, its rich four-cheese mac and cheese, and even grilled snapper.
  • The Express Grocery and Deli

    1619 Fannin Downtown/ Midtown

    713-650-3101

Good-natured proprietor Mike Baba presides over a rich array of customers in this longtime fixture at the southeast end of downtown. The small grocery, grill and deli that he and his family operate is a corner business in the Houston House apartments - and a cornerstone for a legion of loyal patrons. More than mere foodstuffs - great burgers, sandwiches and the like - are served up in this place. Regulars find themselves developing strange appetites for the other offerings dispensed: news and gossip, helpful advice, humor from the give-and-take of customers and staff, mutual respect and heartfelt first-name interest in the lives that intersect here, however briefly.

  • The French Corner

1104 Old Spanish Trail Inner Loop - SW

    713-661-5324

Family owned and operated, The French Corner has been providing breakfast, lunch and catering services to Houston since 1985. Perhaps best known for sandwiches, The French Bistro offers boxed lunches with your choice of sandwich, wrap or fajita wrap, or even a barbecue sandwich. Vegetarians will be pleased with the Brie and Avocado sandwich option. There are also a wide variety of salads and pastas available. Breakfast offerings range from continental style including bagels, pastries, and fruit to frittatas and breakfast tacos. Guests can dine in the dining room during business hours or employ the Corner's catering services for parties of ten or more during off hours.
  • The Hot Bagel Shop

    2015 S. Shepherd River Oaks

    713-520-0340

This counter-service, take-out bagel shop in River Oaks appears to have years' worth of grime ground into the floor, ceilings and walls. People still line up for breakfast and lunch, though, because it's one of the only spots in town you can get an authentic bagel. The shop features a variety of styles and flavors of house-made cream cheese, plus bagel sandwiches and regular deli sandwiches. The bagel dogs - bagels wrapped around kosher sausages, jalapeno sausages or mini sausages - are extremely popular and are often in short supply toward closing time.

  • Kahn's Delicatessen - CLOSED

    2429 Rice Blvd. Kirby-West U

    713-529-2891

We might quibble over whether Mike Kahn has the best Reuben in town, but it's certainly one of the biggest -- a handsome half-pound of meat on rye that's so large, you'll attract passersby as you eat. He also has developed some inventive alternatives to the classic Reuben. Check out the killer brownies.

  • Katz's Deli and Bar

    616 Westheimer St. Montrose

    713-521-3838

Katz's never closes, and is one of the few, true 24 hour eateries in the Houston area. You can't go wrong with a salad plate with chopped liver or egg salad, a stack of fresh rye bread and some pickles at Katz's Deli in Montrose, especially late at night. The Reuben sandwich is their specialty.

  • Kenny & Ziggy's Delicatessen Restaurant

    2327 Post Oak Blvd. Galleria

    713-871-8883

Homesick New Yorkers make lunch at Kenny & Ziggy's Delicatessen Restaurant a standing-room-only affair, savoring the fluffy, delicious matzo balls, the Hungarian-style stuffed cabbage, the Hungarian goulash and the strong, barley-based varnishkas. It should be noted that owner Ziggy Gruber was featured in the documentary Deli Man about the vanishing tradition of New York-style delis across America. The three-inch-thick pastrami deli sandwiches are served with Hebrew National mustard, flown in from New York. The New York cheesecake is dense but slightly fluffy on the inside. Truly a Houston gem.

  • Kojak's Deli & Fine Foods

    1912 W. 18th St. Heights

    713-426-1800

The wide variety of homemade lunch and dinner specials are a draw at this Mediterranean-themed, order-at-the-counter neighborhood spot. Breakfasts range from steel-cut oats to French toast, migas to traditional eggs and bacon. Lunchtime brings a terrific Cuban sandwich, Middle Eastern specialties like hummus and falafel, chicken enchiladas, a gyro plate and quiche. Dinner might include lemon-pepper chicken, seared salmon or meatloaf.
  • Kraftsmen Cafe

    611 W. 22nd St. Heights

    713-426-1300

The best thing about Scott Tycer's Kraftsmen Cafe isn't the charming dining room filled with cozy furniture nor the fact that you can BYO-champagne for mimosas on the weekends. It's the fact that all of the bread for the breakfast croissants and the sandwiches at lunch is baked on-site, in the massive Kraftsmen Bakery that takes up much of this old converted textile mill in the Heights. You're invited to get comfortable at both breakfast and lunch, to take in a book or a latte while you eat -- and, in that way, it's one of the most relaxing restaurants in town.

  • Lacey's

    415 Caroline St. Downtown/ Midtown

    713-237-0000

Don't let the plastic red-and-white-checkered tablecloths or the fake salami hanging from the counter fool you into skipping over this place. This fast-action Italian deli serves a busy lunch crowd with classics like meatball poor boys, muffulettas and lasagna. Don't come here if you have a warrant out, since the place is frequented by large men with guns and badges from the nearby courthouse.
  • Leibman's Wine & Fine Foods

    14529 Memorial Memorial

    281-493-3663

This food lover's dream has well-stocked cheese and deli-meats counters. Deli sandwiches, panini and salads make up most of the eat-on-premise business, but it's the take-home gourmet and prepared foods that will keep you coming back. All come with reheating instructions. The wine selection is legendary, especially the South African selections.
  • Local Foods

    2424 Dunstan Rd. Kirby-West U

    713-521-7800

Local Foods is the epitome of a useful restaurant, the kind of place that's relaxed and easy — and inspires you to have a relaxed, easy meal yourself. The choices are streamlined and simple — a few sandwiches, two soups, a handful of salads and sides and a few Texas-made beers and wines — as is the effortlessly chic, updated deli décor. You can take your meal inside, on the shady Village patio or to go. You can even enjoy a cocktail; like everything else here, they're made with Texas-sourced products, keeping Local Foods true to its name.

  • Mandola's Deli

    4105 Leeland East End

    713-223-5186

This unassuming little brown brick building on Leeland, just east of downtown, has been serving hearty Italian-American meals since 1975. Frank and Debbie Mandola are still there most days, but their son Joseph has mostly taken over now and is always ready with a handshake and a smile for his customers. The popular lasagna and Italian beef sandwiches are now available at dinner, too, as the restaurant no longer just serves lunch. Even better: The Mandolas have an excellent and well-priced selection of Italian wines and beers to go along with your dinner, too.

  • MKT BAR

    1001 Austin Downtown/ Midtown

    832-360-2222

MKT BAR is located right inside Phoenicia Specialty Foods, one of the best grocery stores in the city. It's also not a bad little date place, with enough dim lighting and extensive wine and beer lists to keep you busy in addition to the bar food. All of the music is local, and ranges from DJ sets, jazz combos, light rock offerings so it's not too intrusive.

  • Murphy's Deli

    6415 San Felipe Galleria

    713-977-5605

Though famous for New Orleans muffulettas, which were named the best in Houston, this sandwich chain looks more like an upscale New York deli. A huge black-and-white mural welcomes diners, who sit among black-and-white photos and two walls of windows. Simple counter service offers a host of hot and cold sandwiches and hoagies. Try the hot pastrami or the steak and cheese.

  • Nielsen's Delicatessen

    4500 Richmond Ave. Greenway Plaza

    713-963-8005

Unstinting applications of a good, snowy mayonnaise make this Danish hole-in-the-wall's old-fashioned chicken and potato salads among the very best in town. Other treats: corned beef and Swiss on rye with a pale, homemade liver pté; devastating Danish butter cookies by the sack. Ixnay on the cheesecake. Take out, unless you enjoy closetlike quarters.

  • Nundini Chef's Table Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar

    500 N. Shepherd Heights

    713-861-6331

The disconnect between high-quality, authentic ingredients and poor execution at Nundini Chef's Table Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar left us scratching our heads. This cozy, romantic Italian restaurant and delicatessen, by leading Houston purveyor of Italian foods Giampaolo Nundini, does shows great promise. While many of the more ambitious dishes, like veal alla milanese and fettuccine all'uovo papalina, missed the mark, some of the simpler entries, like spaghetti pomodoro fresco e basilico and white pizza topped with bresaola (air-dried beef from Northern Italy), were ideal pairings for the restaurant's extensive and wonderfully affordable wine list, which covers nearly every winemaking region in Italy. The refreshingly reasonable wine mark-ups will have us coming back for more as this newly opened Italian — sure to become a hometown favorite — finds its bearings.
