  • Another Time Soda Fountain

800 Third St., Rosenberg Outside Houston

    281-232-2999

The drinks are the biggest draw at Another Time Soda Fountain, the highly authentic and old-fashioned restaurant located in a 1910 building in historic downtown Rosenberg. Here you'll find lime coolers, Coke shakes, phosphates and homespun shakes and malts -- not the kind of dessert drinks you're likely to encounter at many other places. The one-pound banana splits are a thing of beauty and are best when split, of course, as are the huge burgers and chili cheese dogs.

Just because it's from California, don't discount this modern malt shop and burger palace. • Dot Coffee Shop

7006 Gulf Freeway Outer Loop - SE

    713-644-7669

Dot Coffee Shop may not share ownership with the infamous Kirby House of Pies, but if restaurants could be related, they'd still be cousins. Though the location near 45 and the South Loop brings a slight different crowd, the food is also mostly heavy, traditional American fare (emphasis on breakfast), and there's still a good chance you'll get some good people-watching done if you eat late at night. Unlike similar diner-style places, you get a complimentary bread basket to start things off.

    281-319-0200

The chicken-fried steak is among the best in the state and the humongous ten-ounce hamburger is a real contender in any round-up of Greater Houston's best burgers. Don't miss the giant cannonball schooner filled with homemade banana pudding. Combine the solid country cooking with a location in a 94 year-old building in the historic district of an old boom town and you get a truly charming small town Texas cafe.
  • IHOP

    5729 Westheimer Rd. Galleria

    713-952-1378

IHOP, you hop, we all hop for pancakes? A 24-hour mecca for Houston flapjack lovers from tots to blue-hairs, the now-acronymed International House of Pancakes isn't just a one-trick pony. Besides pancakes in a dizzying array of flavors from chocolate chip to carrot cake (plus seasonal flavors like pumpkin and eggnog), the never-closed breakfast emporium serves everything from omelettes and waffles to chicken-fried steak and pot roast, plus giant carafes of coffee at any hour of the day. Founded in 1958, the pancake house is almost old enough to order off its very own senior menu, a privilege reserved for those 55 and up. IHOP's just a skip and a jump away on Voice Places.

    713-426-5652

This modern American diner in the Heights boasts some enormous breakfasts, excellent burgers, and stellar Texas short-order cooking utilizing locally-sourced ingredients. • Sam's Deli-Diner

    11637 Katy Freeway Memorial

    281-497-8088

Since moving from its old location across the Katy Freeway a few years back, Sam's has spiffed up a bit but hasn't lost that scruffy charm that has always encouraged kids in wet bathing suits to ride their bikes over during the daily noon closure at the local swimming pools to get a scoop of ice cream, construction workers to take their lunch breaks in its booths or businessmen to tuck their tie into their shirts before digging into a greasy jalapeño cheeseburger. Grab a shake made from Blue Bell ice cream and crispy onion rings or marvelously crunchy seasoned fries to go with your burger.

  • Sheffield's Ice House

5118 Telephone Rd. Outer Loop - SE

    713-847-8552

Ice houses are an institution of the Texas landscape, and Sheffield’s has been holding court over its spot on Telephone road ever since it was first constructed in 1942. “In the beginning it was just beer, ice, and milk. The old man always wore a white apron,” declared a long-rooted customer. The regulars here have been coming for decades, and for good reason: the beers are frigid, and cheaper than dirt. Hints of modernity have crept in – the old jukebox finally gave way to an Internet machine, and there are plenty of flat-screen televisions for game-watching, but for the most part Sheffield’s remains the same. As with any proper ice house, there’s often a crock pot of something delicious in the back, and the many roll-top doors are up in sunny weather to give the place an open-air feel. It’s easy to see why Sheffield’s is a former “Best of Houston” winner for Best Icehouse.

  • The Tel-Wink Grill

4318 Telephone Outer Loop - SE

    713-644-4933

This traditional American diner - a little piece of the old-school Telephone Road - caters to the early birds rather than the night owls. Tel-Wink Grill will serve you breakfast whenever you want it, as long as you want it before 2:30 p.m., which is when they close. The prices seem to have ignored inflation since the place first opened in the 1950's, and they probably serve a lot of the same dishes, too -- bacon 'n' eggs, pancakes, chicken fried steak, waffles, grits, and homemade hash browns. If you get there around 10 a.m., be ready for a long but reasonably quick-moving line.

The sampler will easily feed a family of four while giving a good idea of what Greece has to offer, and the classic gyros, crisp calamari and delectable pizzas are popular choices day and night.

Weekend breakfasts see lines out the door. Yale Street Grill proudly serves Community Coffee, old-fashioned burgers, tuna melts and pimento cheese sandwiches, along with daily lunch specials like chicken-fried steak, meat loaf and pork chops.
