  • The Hay Merchant

    1100 Westheimer Rd. Montrose

    713-528-9805

The Hay Merchant is much more than just a beer bar, despite its pedigree under owner and beer guru Kevin Floyd. Its equally talented chef, Antoine Ware, makes sure of that and turns out everything from high-end bar snacks like crispy pig ears and fries covered with Akaushi chili and Redneck cheddar to full-on entrées like lamb sweetbread po-boys and a "big-ass bowl of gumbo." Unlike its sister bar, Anvil, there is ample room inside and no liquor to be found. After all, this is a beer lover's bar, first and foremost. The list of beers in this uniquely Montrose haunt is enough to make even the most stern devotee of Bud Light convert the craft side.

  • Lucille's

5512 La Branch St. Third Ward

    713-568-2505

Chef Chris Williams comes from a culinary legacy with deep Texas roots: His great-grandmother Lucille, the restaurant's namesake, was a pioneer of Southern foods who owned U.S. Smith's Famous BBQ in Fort Worth and helped establish one of the first college-level commercial foods departments in the nation at Prairie View A&M University. At his charming Museum District restaurant, Williams serves the same Southern food that Lucille did, including her "claim to fame" chili biscuits, shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes and braised oxtails.

  • The Pass

    807 Taft St. River Oaks

    713-628-9020

The Pass has garnered rave reviews from media outlets across the country since it opened on the border of Montrose and downtown Houston in November of 2012. It’s all well-deserved. The food is unlike anything else in Houston—small tasting plates artfully constructed that put a unique spin on otherwise familiar ingredients. The menu changes regularly, featuring dishes like a curry, pea and chanterelles spring roll or foie gras tart. But no matter the menu, every dish, from the bread in the shape of mushrooms to gourmet Dippin' Dots and Campari lollipops, is made with a bit of whimsy that turns meals into more than just eating. Dinner at The Pass is about the experience, the showmanship, the wink and nod that is at play in every little ingredient. It doesn't always work, but when it does, the meal can be, well, show-stopping. It’s no surprise the restaurant was a James Beard semifinalist for "Outstanding Service" in 2016, because that is just as exemplary here as the food.

  • Roost

    1972 Fairview St. River Oaks

    713-523-7667

Chef and owner Kevin Naderi has created Montrose restaurant Roost as a reflection of his own culinary inspirations, and they are many: It’s farm-to-table, enhanced with Persian, Japanese, Thai, Korean and Mediterranean flavors alongside local craft beer and a short wine list. It all works, though, and the nightly crowds attest to this. Naderi won the Houston Press Menu of Menus Iron Fork competition so many times (four), he had to retire. He also conquered Food Network star Bobby Flay on his show, Beat Bobby Flay. Hit Roost to get a glimpse of his talent, like the signature dish of roasted cauliflower topped with bonito flakes. It’s one of the few constants on the ever-changing but always impressive locally-inspired menu.

  • Uchi

    904 Westheimer Rd. Montrose

    713-522-4808

James Beard Award-winning chef Tyson Cole's ultramodern restaurant is a much-welcomed Austin import. It didn’t take long for Uchi to gain a loyal following and years after its opening it still manages to pack the house, so reservations are imperative for those who want to sit in the steely-chic dining room. Otherwise, walk-ins can usually be accommodated at the surprisingly cozy bar or just hang out for drinks on the patio. A spot-on sake list (as well as beer and wine) accompanies a menu of "hot" and "cold" tastings such as machi cure with smoked yellowtail (aka “Japanese nachos”) along with more traditional Japanese items including sushi, sashimi and rolls. Happy hour is every weekday and offers smaller portions of some of Uchi's favorites like walu walu (oak-grilled escolar) and fried chicken karaage at drastically reduced prices.

  • The West End

    5320 Westheimer Rd. Galleria

    713-590-0616

This Galleria-area “Public House,” as it calls itself, draws its clientele largely from young professionals and business people. This place is big, with a huge patio that can seat more than 400 people, ideal for the many parties the venue often hosts -- birthday, company, Christmas, etc. The extensive menu of bar food includes burgers, wings and fish and chips, as well as the Wednesday steak night that seems mandatory for Houston bars at this point. There is a bit of a Clockwork Orange theme going on here, with images inspired by the film on employees' T-shirts, menus and signs, but the bar itself looks nothing like the Korova Milk Bar, maybe a little Duke of New York Pub, for all you Kubrick fanatics. Join their pub club to become a “droog” and earn points towards free appetizers, West End merchandise and even a trip to a brewery of your choice in Europe, including airfare and hotel.
