  • Hunky Dory

    1801 N. Shepherd Heights

    713-864-2450

Houston diners have waited for three years for chef Richard Knight’s new restaurant, Hunky Dory — and it’s totally worth it. His first Houston restaurant, Feast, closed way back in 2013. It’s now a friendly ghost that stops by and says “Hello!” in the form of the greatly missed warm sticky toffee pudding and “nose to tail” dishes like the whole hog pasta, which incorporates pig’s head, pork sausage trotter and house-made . Hunky Dory is in a modern, new space, but there’s a gentle wisdom about it. It serves sustainable fare, like bycatch, in ways that are fun and approachable. The fish and chips, which enrobes the bycatch fish of the day in a perfect, crunchy batter coating, is probably the best rendition of the dish in Houston. A wood-burning grill that’s as much a work of art as it is functional cranks out steaks and chops. A group of three or more diners should most definitely indulge in the $30 Silver Salver to start, a gleaming platter laden with about a dozen kinds of charcuterie, cheeses, relishes and bread.

  • Queen Vic Pub & Kitchen

    2712 Richmond Ave. Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-533-0022

A bit of Britain in Houston — and a bit of India, too — keeps us coming back to The Queen Vic Pub & Kitchen in Upper Kirby. Indeed, it's the kind of place where you can get so cozy with a craft beer and a curry with chips, you might never want to leave. Befitting its name, the pub also has a brilliant beer selection, including hard-to-find classics and limited-batch Houston brews.

  • Rudyard's

    2010 Waugh Dr. Montrose

    713-521-0521

Where else in Houston could you see Valient Thorr, eat a near-orgasmic cheeseburger (seriously, it's kinda sexy), watch the Rockets on the tube and play a game of drunkenly dangerous darts all in the same night? Rudyard's, that's where! Located just off Waugh in the Montrose and amidst town homes and sketchy backstreets, its charm isn't manufactured or pre-packaged like all the other corporate "pubs" in town. Rudz is a product of its environment through and through, populated by our city's own indie musicians and artists. The beer menu is lively and always changing, so be sure to stop by frequently to taste some of the state's best micro-brews. Also, the bathroom wall graffiti is the best in town. The above-average bar food is popular.

  • The West End

    5320 Westheimer Rd. Galleria

    713-590-0616

This Galleria-area “Public House,” as it calls itself, draws its clientele largely from young professionals and business people. This place is big, with a huge patio that can seat more than 400 people, ideal for the many parties the venue often hosts -- birthday, company, Christmas, etc. The extensive menu of bar food includes burgers, wings and fish and chips, as well as the Wednesday steak night that seems mandatory for Houston bars at this point. There is a bit of a Clockwork Orange theme going on here, with images inspired by the film on employees' T-shirts, menus and signs, but the bar itself looks nothing like the Korova Milk Bar, maybe a little Duke of New York Pub, for all you Kubrick fanatics. Join their pub club to become a “droog” and earn points towards free appetizers, West End merchandise and even a trip to a brewery of your choice in Europe, including airfare and hotel.
