  • Bacon Bros. Public House

2110 Town Square Place, Sugar Land Outside Houston

    832-532-0342

Bacon Bros. Public House opened on March 6 at 2110 Town Square Place, adjacent to the Marriott Hotel in Sugar Land. The Greenville, South Carolina-based restaurant is known as a gastropub committed to Southern hospitality and a love of bacon. Food is flavorful and straightforward, and everything is made from scratch, save the maple bourbon ice cream, which is served with a delightfully nutty, homemade pecan pie. Skip the charcuterie and barbecue; items like the Mexican street corn (elote), fried quail and succotash are the true winners.

  • BRC Gastropub

    519 Shepherd Heights

    713-861-2233

BRC Gastropub is cheeky in more ways than one: Yes, the "BRC" stands for "Big Red Cock" and the menu follows a similar adult playfulness. Don't expect to escape without dropping some bills on the food, but do expect a phenomenal beer selection and some truly inspired dishes. The Dr Pepper-fried quail is pure Texana, while the "Rice Crispy" ice cream sandwiches make you feel like a kid again. Happy hour is recommended, as the Rice Military/Heights-area restaurant only gets busier as the night goes on, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.

  • Conservatory

    1010 Prairie Downtown/ Midtown

    832-919-8382

Conservatory Beer Garden and Food Hall takes advantage of the recent uptick in the perception of downtown as a destination, while adding value of its own. Late hours and an array of options are a boon to downtown diners, drinkers and after-drink-diners alike. Grab a beer from the well-appointed and reasonably priced tap wall and grab a spot in line at your favorite vendor. If you’re in a group, divide and conquer. Samurai Noodle and Melange Creperie offer the best bet in terms of quality, and some of the pita sandwiches at Myth Kafe make for excellent drinking food. Each of the vendors has its own stumbling points as they expand or acclimate to the different service model necessitated by sharing space in a food hall with broad hours. For now, we recommend steering clear of El Burro and the Bull, where the barbecue just isn’t up to par.

  • Hearsay Gastro Lounge

    218 Travis Downtown/ Midtown

    713-225-8079

This gastro-lounge, located in a turn-of-the-century building near Market Square, serves upscale standards like a burger topped with bacon, cheese, avocados, jalapeños and a fried egg (with a side of mac 'n cheese) and fried asparagus battered with Saint Arnold beer. The extensive cocktail menu reflects a dedication to a classic aesthetic, although they do serve vodka, which some expert mixologists eschew. This is a perfect date night place, and if things go right (or wrong), Warren's is just steps away.

All of the music is local, and ranges from DJ sets, jazz combos, light rock offerings so it's not too intrusive.

  • Mongoose Versus Cobra

1011 McGowen St., (COMING SOON) Downtown/ Midtown

    713-650-6872

Midtown has no shortage of bars. But it does have a shortage of bars that are serious about their product — craft beer in this case — while playful and casual at the same time. You don't have to dress up to enjoy a Friday night here. You don't even have to enjoy beer, as the classic cocktail menu is equally solid. But beers are still the advised poison of choice, with a rotating list of more than 40 draft brews that range from quirky local experiments like Buffalo Bayou casks to an array of terrific Belgians. The wood-and-metal-laden interior is cool and loft-like, with a Brooklyn vibe that belies its Bayou City roots.

  • Queen Vic Pub & Kitchen

    2712 Richmond Ave. Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-533-0022

A bit of Britain in Houston — and a bit of India, too — keeps us coming back to The Queen Vic Pub & Kitchen in Upper Kirby. Indeed, it's the kind of place where you can get so cozy with a craft beer and a curry with chips, you might never want to leave. Befitting its name, the pub also has a brilliant beer selection, including hard-to-find classics and limited-batch Houston brews.

  • Shepherd Park Draught House

3402 N. Shepherd Dr. Outer Loop - NE

    832-767-1380

Shepherd Park Draught House specializes in above-average pub grub and local craft beers, a pleasant combination to run across in the fairly quiet Garden Oaks/Oak Forest area just north of the Heights. Happy hour specials let you enjoy beer and wine on the cheap, while late-night hours ensure that locals don't have to venture inside the Loop to find something good to eat on a weekend evening. Burgers are your best bet here, as is the Sunday morning brunch that's perfect for fighting rock star-size hangovers. The walls are covered in rock paraphernalia, including a section plastered in classic punk and hardcore flyers, some from Houston's own sweaty shows.

  • The West End

    5320 Westheimer Rd. Galleria

    713-590-0616

This Galleria-area “Public House,” as it calls itself, draws its clientele largely from young professionals and business people. This place is big, with a huge patio that can seat more than 400 people, ideal for the many parties the venue often hosts -- birthday, company, Christmas, etc. The extensive menu of bar food includes burgers, wings and fish and chips, as well as the Wednesday steak night that seems mandatory for Houston bars at this point. There is a bit of a Clockwork Orange theme going on here, with images inspired by the film on employees' T-shirts, menus and signs, but the bar itself looks nothing like the Korova Milk Bar, maybe a little Duke of New York Pub, for all you Kubrick fanatics. Join their pub club to become a “droog” and earn points towards free appetizers, West End merchandise and even a trip to a brewery of your choice in Europe, including airfare and hotel.

  • Yard House Houston

800 W. Sam Houston Parkway Outer Loop - NW

    713-461-9273

This California-based chain boasts the "world's largest selection of draft beers," and the large oval bar is certainly the centerpiece of this hopping place. Yard House is a cross between a sports bar -- there's a TV anywhere you look -- and a gastropub. The menu is extensive and features the usual burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, pastas and salads, but also decent seafood and steaks. The only downside is that it's always busy.
