  • Bistro Alex

800 W. Sam Houston Parkway Outer Loop - NW

    713-827-3545

Alex Brennan-Martin's famed Texas Creole Cuisine can now be had on the west side of town. Antique mesquite wood planks line the walls and ceilings of Bistro Alex, and there's an open kitchen where an in-house charcuterie is churning out such classics as terrine de foie gras, Spanish chorizo and Italian sopressata (salami). The famed turtle soup is also on the menu here, as are other fabulous dishes like shrimp andouillete, mussels and some unbelievable flat breads (try the duck and gala apple version). Whatever you do, leave room for the white chocolate bread pudding, the café au lait cheesecake, or both.
  • Common Bond

    1706 Westheimer Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-529-3535

On weekends, you’re likely to find a line out the door at this Montrose sweet spot. But don’t worry, the fast-casual cafe manages the Snapchatting crowd just fine, and besides, it’s worth the wait. Now co-owned by the Carabba family (yes, those Carabbas), Common Bond serves up the same sugar-dusted, chocolate-dipped, and whipped-cream-dolloped treats that it has from the start. The kouign amann (like a caramelized sugar croissant) and the plain croissant have been two of the most popular baked goods, while desserts like lime or chocolate tarts and Black Forest mousse make for a sweet end to a light meal. The savory menu changes frequently, but the kitchen puts just as much energy into sandwiches, soups and salads as it does into the perfect croissant.

  • Glass Wall, The Restaurant

    933A Studewood Heights

    713-868-7930

This is one of the best new restaurants that's opened in Houston in years. Call it a "New American Surfer Bistro" if you're looking for a category. But don't get too fixated on anything in particular, because the menu changes monthly. You can only hope they have some slow-cooked short ribs and hand-cut French fries when you show up.

  • Plonk Beer & Wine Bistro

    1214 W. 43rd St. Outer Loop - NE

    713-290-1070

Plonk bills itself as a Garden Oaks/Oak Forest wine bar, but it’s so much more than that. The impeccably compiled wine list (owner Scott Miller was once the wine director for Pappas Steakhouse) is complemented by an eccentric beer list that’s heavy on local and craft brews. And both lists are bolstered by a full dinner menu that features modern American cuisine as well as favorites like an aged hanger steak or a juicy cheeseburger topped with guanciale.

  • Ruggles Green

    2311 W. Alabama Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-533-0777

This place is billed as "Houston's first certified green restaurant." You order at the counter, and your food is served to you. The menu is extensive. The high-protein "hempanadas" filled with beef and raisins are remarkably good, and the crab cake fritters are a crowd pleaser. A simple salad of "hydroponic" butter lettuce is surprisingly tasty, and the spicy fish tacos are great. There are 13 different pizzas here, with the steak version being a favorite.
