  • Biskit Junkie

    403 Westheimer Montrose

    713-688-1754

Biskit Junkie is an all-day (till 3 p.m.) breakfast and brunch concept in the heart of Montrose. No liquor license means you won’t be enjoying bottomless mimosas with your eggs Benny, but they’re not that great in the first place. For the most part, sticking to simple things served on biscuits is the way to go here. Odd standouts include the surprisingly alluring breakfast salad and the chilaquiles. The former eats like a handful of greens run deliciously through every breakfast trope you can imagine, and the latter is a simple yet satisfying brunch dish elevated by the cliché addition of a handful of fried eggs. Be forewarned that parking can be a real bear.

  • Grooves

    2300 Pierce St. East End

    713-759-9700

Grooves is damn near legendary to the Houston hip-hop scene. This Third Ward bar near downtown is home to some of the best music around and a pretty diverse crowd of younguns and older folks alike. Sure, jazz bands shake things up during the early hours, but once that clock strikes 10 p.m., Grooves becomes a hip-hop Cinderella and throws on its party gown -- with the help of some very talented DJs, of course.
  • Hobbit Cafe

    2243 Richmond Ave. Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-526-5460

The sandwiches and burgers are the stars at the Hobbit Cafe, particularly the Martinique burger, a mountainous half-pound patty of Angus beef with so many messy toppings that you practically need to be hosed down when done eating. We still can't figure out how the Hobbit prepares its delicious tabbouleh, but we'll have to keep ordering it at this little house near Upper Kirby until we can reverse-engineer the recipe at home. It's all enough to make even Smaug the dragon happy.

  • IHOP

    5729 Westheimer Rd. Galleria

    713-952-1378

IHOP, you hop, we all hop for pancakes? A 24-hour mecca for Houston flapjack lovers from tots to blue-hairs, the now-acronymed International House of Pancakes isn't just a one-trick pony. Besides pancakes in a dizzying array of flavors from chocolate chip to carrot cake (plus seasonal flavors like pumpkin and eggnog), the never-closed breakfast emporium serves everything from omelettes and waffles to chicken-fried steak and pot roast, plus giant carafes of coffee at any hour of the day. Founded in 1958, the pancake house is almost old enough to order off its very own senior menu, a privilege reserved for those 55 and up. IHOP's just a skip and a jump away on Voice Places.

  • Le Mistral

    1400 Eldridge Parkway Memorial

    832-379-8322

Le Mistral houses not only a restaurant but also a bright, beautiful building next door. There's a full-service bar, a charming patio and even a gourmet food store/boulangerie in case you didn't get your fill of Chef David Denis's food. His brother, Sylvain, runs the front of the house, which is usually filled with Energy Corridor diners as chic as the modern dining room and elegant food. No other French restaurant in town can touch Denis's terrine de foie gras or duck confit.

  • Morningstar

    4721 N. Main Heights

    832-806-1115

Morningstar is David Buehrer’s reimagining of the neighborhood cafe. It starts with coffee and doughnuts, but that tells only part of the story. The coffee is consistently excellent, as should be expected of the man behind Greenway Coffee and Blacksmith. The doughnuts stumbled at first, but have hit their stride with intriguing flavor combinations and concepts. Don’t miss the salted lime and chile pineapple fritter, with its funky fruity flavor and burst of salty chile heat. Morningstar also incorporates a wide-ranging tea program, with a heavy focus on matcha. The ceremonial green tea shows up across the menu, from a selection of options that frame the tea through the lens of espresso beverages and an utterly beguiling spin on Vietnamese iced coffee in the matcha sua da, to a matcha frosted raised and glazed doughnut. Elsewhere, rice bowls and inventive “cereal” options showcase the international flavors that provide much of Houston’s dining spark. Don’t miss the kaleidoscopic flavors and textures of the Valrhona Chia pudding, an unexpectedly delightful vegan offering. Likewise the Moneycat potatoes. Crispy fried with tender and earthy sweet interiors, the potatoes come glazed with funky gochujang, drizzled with zippy Kewpie mayo and showered with aromatic herbs. More than any of the menu items, though, Morningstar is a place whose focus is on accommodation. It has what you want, and wants you to treat it as you will. Have a drink, have a bite, have a meal. In the grand tradition of neighborhood cafes, Morningstar mostly wants to make you feel at home, and it succeeds mightily.

  • Myth Kafe

    1730 Jefferson St Downtown/ Midtown

    713-739-0990

Myth Kafe is a warm, inviting, hidden treasure in the southeastern corner of Downtown Houston where I45 and US59 meet. Not easy to find, the restaurant is nonetheless a favorite of many working men and women who pour in during the lunch hours and gobble down gyros and lemon chicken with the housemade “mystic potatoes” which are seasoned with lemon, mustard and rosemary. During the evening the pace slows down and residents of the East End and Midtown come to enjoy long, leisurely dinners with a carafe of the complimentary house wine. (The cafe does not have a beer and wine license but does offer wine, as it’s part of the Mediterranean tradition to offer wine to your guests. Patrons are also welcome to bring their own wine or beer without a cork fee.) The pace of the restaurant is slow, thus their slogan “Siga Siga,” or “Slowly slowly,” meaning all good things take time. Patience here is rewarded in the form of perfectly moist meat, vegetables that aren’t abused or hidden in sauces or cream, and genuine Greek desserts that are made from scratch, in-house. Myth Kafe is owned by Georgios Petrou, his wife, and the cook, Charalambos, or “Harry” for short. The team is a small one, but all three worked in tourism in Athens, Greece, and are very sensitive to the needs of their patrons, including when to leave them in peace to eat and converse without interruption, as is customary in Europe. Regulars know to flag down George when they’re in need of something, and George- knowing the regulars by heart- usually doesn’t even have to ask what. The restaurant also offers catering, take-out, and delivery via grubhub, eat24, zifty, eatstreet, favor, chownow, and goodybag. They are also available to rent out for private events and occasionally have special events of their own, listed on the event page of their website: www.mythkafe.com

  • Niko Niko's

    2520 Montrose Blvd. Montrose

    713-528-0966

Ordering at the counter makes for faster service, despite long lines at this Montrose-area Houston institution. It's hard not to like everything on the extensive and authentic Greek menu. The gyros and lamb shank are legendary. Food is served on Styrofoam plates with plastic utensils that spoil the atmosphere a little but don't affect the food. Niko Niko's also has great desserts and baked goods.

  • Osteria Mazzantini

    2200 Post Oak Blvd. Galleria

    713-993-9898

Osteria Mazzantini arrived on the scene and immediately made a name for itself thanks to chef/owner John Sheely's unique version of upscale Italian home cooking. There's no foam or gel or maltodextrin here, but there are sometimes challenging flavor combinations and interesting ingredients that will satisfy adventuresome and picky eaters alike. The wine list is one of the best in town, and even though Mazzantini is not a steakhouse, its strip loin could hold its own against the fare at any major steak restaurant. Go for lunch to try the pizza, and hit up happy hour for great deals on bar bites and creative cocktails. And then thank Sheely's Italian ancestors for instilling in him the desire to bring a little bit of their homeland to the Gulf Coast.

  • Toulouse

4444 Westheimer, Suite E-100 River Oaks

    713-871-0768

Toulouse Café & Bar is located at 4444 Westheimer in the middle of the bustling River Oaks District in the Uptown/Galleria area. The Lombardi Family Concepts casual bistro is beautifully decorated with art deco wine posters and dark woods, and the dining room opens up to a perfectly manicured promenade. The menu is a delight, featuring mostly French fare with the exception of smoked salmon latkes, crab cakes and calamari. The beef bourguignon, made with braised boneless short ribs and homemade pasta, is outstanding. The soufflé with Grand Marnier sauce is the sweet way to go. Unfortunately, the diver scallops tasted a bit fishy and one of the three plated was entirely too rare. The charcuterie plate was not the best choice, but the cheese plate was very good. Toulouse is a nice place to meet up with friends for a cocktail at the bar or for people-watching. Ask for the happy hour menu, which features several $7 petites bouchées and boissons (mini pastries and drinks).
