  • Alpha Bakery & Deli

11209 Bellaire Blvd. Outer Loop - SW

    281-988-5222

At Alpha Bakery you get a sandwich on a crunchy Vietnamese French bread roll that's baked on the premises, spread with butter and pâté and stuffed with roasted pork, shredded carrots, cukes, cilantro and jalapeño for half of the price of the sandwich chain product. You can't get a sweetened coconut rice dessert at Subway, either.

  • Bubba's Sports Bar & Grill

    6225 Washington Ave. Heights

    281-888-4215

Bubba's remains a refuge and ultimate neighborhood hang for the Rice Military drinking class. Though it may look small from the road, but it's bigger than you think. The spirits and beer selection is likewise small, but adequate for a bar that stays simple and true to its patrons.

  • Cedars Bakery

8619 Richmond Ave Outer Loop - SW

    713-706-4141

A Southwest-side bakery first and foremost, Cedars nevertheless offers a small and intriguing menu of Lebanese flatbreads called manaeesh and shawarma specials on the weekends. The sojok flatbread, with a topping of dry beef sausage, tastes like beef chorizo and begs to be ordered again and again, as does the zaatar and cheese flatbread. This "half-and-half" is best enjoyed with a bowl of lebne, soft cheese, on the side so be sure to order that as well. And remember to take a tray of cookies and a bag of pita bread with you before you leave; that's what Cedars does best, after all.
  • Christy's Donuts

    1103 W. Gray River Oaks

    713-524-4005

This family-run shop has been serving fresh donuts in Montrose folks for years. The service is quick and friendly, and the selection rivals that of any chain. Of course, kolaches are available. The heavy croissant and biscuit sandwiches (served hot out of the microwave) are still a popular breakfast item. The dining room is clean, though a little dingy - the building is older. But there's plenty of interesting stuff on the walls, like business awards for community involvement and customer photos.

  • Common Bond

    1706 Westheimer Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-529-3535

On weekends, you’re likely to find a line out the door at this Montrose sweet spot. But don’t worry, the fast-casual cafe manages the Snapchatting crowd just fine, and besides, it’s worth the wait. Now co-owned by the Carabba family (yes, those Carabbas), Common Bond serves up the same sugar-dusted, chocolate-dipped, and whipped-cream-dolloped treats that it has from the start. The kouign amann (like a caramelized sugar croissant) and the plain croissant have been two of the most popular baked goods, while desserts like lime or chocolate tarts and Black Forest mousse make for a sweet end to a light meal. The savory menu changes frequently, but the kitchen puts just as much energy into sandwiches, soups and salads as it does into the perfect croissant.

  • Crescent City Beignets

    3260 Westheimer Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-520-8291

Except for the updated accents, this coffeehouse looks like a New Orleans original, with exposed brick walls, black-and-white photography and zydeco music in the background. The specialty here is, of course, beignets, which are as hot and fluffy as you remember them at Cafe du Monde. The house beverage, café au lait, is a vacation in a cup, but we recommend another treat: granitas, akin to frozen coffee smoothies. Crescent City also serves Cajun/Creole entrées.

  • Croissant-Brioche French Bakery

    2435 Rice Blvd. Kirby-West U

    713-526-9188

In the heart of Rice Village is a little French bakery serving up fare both sweet and savory with the coffee. Try the almond croissant, a big, buttery, flaky monster of a croissant slathered with almond paste and topped with toasted almonds, or one of their adorable custard tarts dressed with fresh fruit. Their cafe mocha and lattes are generously dressed with shavings of chocolate for a sweet treat. Hungry? Try a meal of their mushroom quiche or turkey sandwich on a pillowy croissant.

  • Dacapo's Pastry Cafe

    1141 E. 11th St. Heights

    713-869-9141

This is a tiny, quiet spot in the Heights, perfect for consuming worthwhile calories. Dacapo Pastry Cafe's desserts, cakes and cookies are homemade, and it is impossible to pick the best, although the banana split cake and the raspberry cream tres leches probably would win. They also serve sandwiches on homemade breads. The "healthy pollo supreme," lean chicken on peppered herb bread, is superb, as is the "vegetarian special." Salads - all with homemade dressings - soups and fabulous quiches round out the menu.

  • Earl of Sandwich

1930 Highway 6 S., Sugar Land Outside Houston

    281-240-2408

Roger Clemens's franchise (the original's in Disney Land), is a "walk up, order and watch your hot sandwich being made" kinda place. The place does lots of business, so the interior is large and accommodating, especially the back, which is designed to look and feel like a library. The sandwiches have cute names like cannonballs (meatballs, marinara and mozzarella) and Le Frenchy (ham, brie and dijonnaise sauce), although at breakfast time the names are plain and simple. Cobb, Chinese chicken, Caesar and tuna are among the decent, yet unremarkable, salad offerings.

French Riviera Bakery has been around for 30 years, but a few years ago they moved to their newer and bigger location on Chimney Rock. If you haven't been there lately, you owe yourself a treat. The sandwiches are awesome, the pastries are exceptional and the espresso drinks are top-notch. Don't forget to take a loaf of bread home.

  • Happy Fatz

    3510 White Oak Heights

    713-426-3554

At first glance, a bakery-slash-hot dog stand is a strange idea. But Happy Fatz makes it work, combining the two into a charming little restaurant that's casual enough to incorporate both ideas. It doesn't feel odd to linger over a hot dog and an Italian soda in the old converted house, then follow up your meal with a miniature pineapple upside down cake or a cupcake to go. You can even add a shot of milk for $1. The dogs are better than the baked goods, though: all-beef, served in Slow Dough buns, with plenty of fresh and inventive toppings.

  • Hot Breads Bakers and Confectioners

5700-A Hillcroft Outer Loop - SW

    713-785-1212

Believe it or not, this is a fast-food franchise that started in Madras, India, in 1988. The idea was to bring Western-style baked goods to an Indian audience, but the bakery offerings eventually morphed into a European-Indian fusion style. Chicken croquettes and "chicken hot dogs" are popular here, as are the masala breads, cookies and tea cakes. After opening 52 locations in India, the chain spread throughout the Middle East and went on to Europe. (There are two locations in Paris.) This is one of three locations in the States.

  • House of Pies Restaurant

    6142 Westheimer Galleria

    713-782-1290

This old-fashioned diner, open 24/7, serves big breakfasts and simple comfort food all day long. After hours, it fills with the sorts of interesting people, from police officers to strippers from the nearby clubs just off shift. Soups, sandwiches (try the tuna-and-cheese melt), salads and burgers are the mainstays here, along with the namesake pies they have for offer. The friendly and talkative service staff are eager to recommend their favorite pies, and among the most popular are fruit, cream meringue and cheesecake.

  • Kolache Factory

    10535 Westheimer Rd. Memorial

    713-952-2253

This simple, clean and surprisingly well appointed bakery chain is a welcome sight compared to most fast-food outlets. The reason folks throng here, however, has nothing to do with aesthetics. They come for the authentic Czech pastry, thick and doughy, with just a hint of sweetness. You can get the traditional fruit-topped versions, as well as the best sausage and ham versions in town. But for something a little different, try the ranchero, Philly cheese steak or spicy Polish sausage.
