  • The Brewery Tap

    717 Franklin Downtown/ Midtown

    713-237-1537

A state historical marker outside the Brewery Tap honors the building's past as one of Houston's biggest breweries, which at one point took up several acres of what is now prime downtown real estate. Housed in the old Houston Ice & Brewing Company building (the actual brewery shuttered in 1950), the bar has an old-school luster otherwise only found downtown at La Carafe or Warren's Inn a few blocks east. Depending on the season, the Brewery Tap is also a perfect spot to lay low after an Astros or Rockets game. Sharing the building with the Brewery Tap, the Magnolia Ballroom hosts wedding receptions and the like in its grand halls. If you come on the right night, you can sometimes catch a punk show too.

  • Brews Brothers Brew Pub

    2404 Strand St. Galveston

    409-763-2739

Brews Brothers is the bar in Galveston to stop by if you love craft beers; the list of available selections is conveniently displayed on the flatscreen TV behind the bar. In addition to the beers from various breweries, Brews Brothers has a license to brew themselves and they have a new beer flavor available every Friday; Cranberry Cobbler was just out the week we visited. Brews also has plans to sell small batches of their beers throughout the country in the near future. Equal care is taken in the preparation of the food; the in-house burgers are made with Black Angus beef obtained from a small farm north of College Station, for example. Wine and cigars are sold here as well, and the bar is big with soccer fans who enjoy watching matches on the projection-screen TV.

  • Brian O'Neill's Traditional Irish Pub

    5555 Morningside Kirby-West U

    713-522-2603

This Rice Village bar is a fixture on that neighborhood's bar scene, and it's a mandatory stop for any party blazing a path through the 'hood on the weekends. There's a roomy outdoor patio, cover bands reel out the hits on the weekends, and you can always expect to leave walking at an angle. Since 2002 it's been a proving ground for Rice University livers and a favorite of the older set who enjoy the dark ambience and — gasp — accessible seating. Space at the bar is cramped with guys and gals flirting, so make sure you just post up at a table and make nice with a roving waiter or waitress to keep yourself lubricated.

  • The Bull & Bear Tavern

    11980 Westheimer Memorial

    281-496-6655

A location in the ex-pat dense west suburbs of Houston means that The Bull & Bear is often packed with Englishmen, Irishmen, Scots and Welshmen -- all likely there for the massive selection of sporting matches The Bull & Bear screens daily. When a match is on, settle in at your table -- if you can find one -- and indulge in comforting pub dishes like chicken curry and a mound of chips or the best cottage pie in town. No tables? Score a seat at the long, well-tended mahogany bar.

    5304 FM 1960 E., Humble Outside Houston

    281-852-6996

Like Cheers, Mulligan's is a joint where people know the names of the north Houston patrons who swamp this place to observe sports (on three big-screen TVs), as well as participate in sports (well, recreation activities at least, with pool tables and a game room). To soak up the range of liquor offered at the full bar, Mulligan's offers a good menu of burgers and deli sandwiches.

  • Griff's Houston

    3416 Roseland St. Montrose

    713-528-9912

Griff's, a very neighborhood-oriented sports bar, serves standard, artery-clogging bar food all day up until closing time. The interior is comfortable and worn - read: this falls on the dive side of the dive-fancy spectrum, in a good way - and the patio is spacious. Friday and Saturday nights bring dollar Lone Stars and a DJ-fueled party atmosphere, but most other times you can enjoy a reasonably peaceful bite in a 45-year-old bar. Tuesday is steak night and Wednesday brings pork chops, both for around ten bucks.

  • The Mezzanine Lounge

    2200 SW Freeway Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-528-6399

The Mezzanine Lounge boasts a diverse clientele, and the beautiful servers are oftentimes randomly in their underwear. Don't worry, it's legal. Forget workman's compensation; this is customer compensation, thank you very much. The bar also offers karaoke along with a party atmosphere upstairs and a calmer, more laid-back feel downstairs. Be forewarned: If you choose to venture upstairs, you will have beer spilled on you and deal with a lot of rowdy drunks. Everyone's into that kind of thing from time to time, but if you're just looking to knock a few back before you drive home, stay downstairs. It's quieter. Recently the bar was also named the "Smartest Bar in America" for its high bar trivia scores. Maybe we can get the Mezz's drinkers looking into a cure for cancer…

  • PJ's Sports Bar

    614 W. Gray River Oaks

    713-520-1748

There's nothing fancy here -- the bar is small, and the decor consists mainly of promotional posters from beer companies. But the food is good and so's the company, especially on Thursdays. That's steak night, and the menu couldn't be more straightforward: two steaks, two salads, two baked potatoes and a pitcher of beer for $27, or $13.50 if you are rolling solo. Owner P.J. Mastro himself barbecues the man-sized steaks.

  • Platypus Brewing

1902 Washington Ave, Suite E Heights

    832-742-5503

We, the Managing Platypi, are a well-travelled, diverse bunch that are all proud to call ourselves Houstonians. Between the 3 owners, we have … 1 Texas gal from the suburbs of Houston (the sweet city of Sugar Land), 2 Aussie “blokes” from Queensland, 2 dual citizens of Australia and the US, a father of 2 girls, a chocolate fiend, a proud UT Longhorn, 2 MBAs, a lover of food websites, an engineer, a CPA, an Indian and a couple of finance consultants…and the list goes on. So, what does this all have to do with Platypus? Well let’s face it … the koala and kangaroo have been done!

  • Red Lion Pub

    2316 S. Shepherd River Oaks

    713-782-3030

Don't let the red pleather-upholstered booths and faux Tudor timbers fool you. This isn't just another fake British pub. This is an authentically fake British pub. Founder and owner Craig Mallinson is the son of British folk singer Sarah Mallinson, and he bakes the Cornish pasties himself. He even has the "Fruity" variety of H&P sauce to slather on your sausage rolls. Order up a hearty ale to go with your curry and prepare to into a world of pleasure — or sleep.

  • Shepherd Park Draught House

3402 N. Shepherd Dr. Outer Loop - NE

    832-767-1380

Shepherd Park Draught House specializes in above-average pub grub and local craft beers, a pleasant combination to run across in the fairly quiet Garden Oaks/Oak Forest area just north of the Heights. Happy hour specials let you enjoy beer and wine on the cheap, while late-night hours ensure that locals don't have to venture inside the Loop to find something good to eat on a weekend evening. Burgers are your best bet here, as is the Sunday morning brunch that's perfect for fighting rock star-size hangovers. The walls are covered in rock paraphernalia, including a section plastered in classic punk and hardcore flyers, some from Houston's own sweaty shows.

    2349 Bissonnet Kirby-West U

    713-526-5282

Under The Volcano, a cozy, eccentric bar in Rice Village, takes its name from a macabre 1947 novel by Malcolm Lowry. It's a great club for most every occasion, be it a birthday, a first date, or the beginning of the longest night of your life.
