  • Bonchon

    24437 Katy Freeway Katy

    281-394-9188

The Katy location of Bonchon opened in late May of 2016 at 24437 Katy Freeway in the Suite #100 space in the Katy Ranch Crossing Shopping Center, on the south-side feeder of Katy Freeway. Bonchon offers fried chicken drumsticks and wings, along with a variety of other Korean and Asian-fusion-inspired dishes. The fried chicken, using the traditional double-fry Korean technique, is tender inside and crispy on the outside, and both the soy garlic and spicy sauces were delicious. The side dishes need improvement, especially the Korean tacos and the house fried rice. Seasoned french fries were executed perfectly. Try the flight of soju to sample the different fruit flavors. The Katy location has a full bar serving wine, beer and mixed cocktails.

  • E-Tao

    5135 W. Alabama St. Galleria

    713-965-0888

In a shopping center full of crappy fast food and ultra-expensive chains, E-Tao is a welcome happy medium: a low-key, low-cost restaurant with great food. Situated near Nordstrom in the Galleria IV, the newest of the expansions to the gigantic mall, E-Tao serves traditional Sichuan favorites that are far more authentic than one would expect for mall food. While it's gaining a following for its soup dumplings (xiaolongbao), the rice-and-pork-stuffed chicken wings are equally excellent.

  • Fusion Taco

    801 Congress St. Downtown/ Midtown

    713-422-2882

Fusion Taco may have something of a hipster name -- what is fusion, anyway? -- but the delectable tacos are serious business. They are true combinations of global flavors from the bayou to Bombay, and they're executed with far more skill than your average food truck demonstrates. The truck made the move to brick-and-mortar on Market Square Park back in July 2013, and since then the space has become a new hot spot for the downtown lunch set. The food is fast, consistent and very inexpensive for the quality of what you're getting. Nearly every component of the tacos is made in-house, from the tortillas to the queso, and the owners, Julia Sharaby and David Grossman, are always there, making sure their ship is running smoothly. With wonderful, unique food, great service and super-reasonable fast-casual prices, Fusion Taco is a welcome addition to the rapidly evolving downtown area.

  • Rice Box — Heights

    300 W. 20th Heights

    713-993-6577

Popular Montrose-area food truck Rice Box opened its first brick-and-mortar at 300 West 20th in the Heights this past February. Its permanent home opened in the space of former Chirps Chicken & Rice. Co-owners John Peterson and Jenny Vo worked with Jim Herd’s Collaborative Projects to transform the space into a futuristic Blade Runner-inspired Chinese food joint. The list of classic items (from food-truck glory days) are still available, along with a splattering of new dishes, including chow fun (flat rice noodles) and salt pepper tofu. Best new additions are the teas on nitro. Go for the General Tso’s chicken, which comes with steamed rice and a giant egg roll, and try the Thai on Nitro for a surprisingly creamy non-dairy version of Thai iced tea.
